Job Summary
Industry Research Partnerships is seeking a temporary Research Intelligence Data Science Specialist to develop and document an internal technical prototype of the IRP Research Intelligence MVP. The prototype will help IRP staff search information about university researchers and prospective industry partners, identify potential researcher-company alignments, and understand the evidence supporting recommended matches. The position will work with approved university and external data to develop the prototype's data architecture, data-integration processes, researcher and company records, semantic search, bidirectional matching methods, evaluation framework, and technical documentation. The position will collaborate with research intelligence, industry partnership, data, and technology partners and will conclude with a documented demonstration and handoff. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Translate defined IRP business questions and workflows into a practical technical plan, prototype architecture, and four-week development backlog.
- Inventory and prepare approved data sources and create a pilot data model covering researchers, companies, opportunities, supporting evidence, provenance, and access restrictions.
- Develop or refine data-ingestion and transformation processes for structured and unstructured information.
- Create searchable researcher and company records using filters, semantic retrieval, or natural-language search methods.
- Prototype faculty-to-company and company-to-CU matching functions that connect recommendations to supporting evidence and appropriate confidence or evidence-quality indicators.
- Test the prototype using representative use cases; identify false positives, omissions, data-quality problems, and known failure modes; and make prioritized refinements.
- Maintain project code, data definitions, assumptions, and documentation in approved shared university locations.
- Prepare a README, data dictionary, known-limitations record, maintenance considerations, prioritized next-phase backlog, and recommendations for possible future scaling.
- Present an internal demonstration and transfer the project materials to designated IRP staff before the temporary appointment concludes.
- Follow applicable university requirements governing data access, privacy, security, licensed resources, artificial intelligence tools, and appropriate use of institutional information.

The hire rate for this position will be $23.00 per hour.

What We Require
- Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, statistics, information science, analytics, engineering, or a closely related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
What You Will Need
- Ability to translate business questions and user requirements into practical data and technical specifications.
- Ability to evaluate analytical or model-generated results, identify limitations, and communicate findings clearly to technical and nontechnical partners.
- Strong attention to data quality, provenance, documentation, reproducibility, and responsible data use.
- Ability to organize and complete a defined body of work within a short, time-boxed assignment.
- Ability to work collaboratively, communicate blockers promptly, and incorporate feedback.
- Good judgment when working with institutional, licensed, or access-controlled information.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Master's degree or equivalent experience in data science, computer science, analytics, information science, or a related field.
- Experience with semantic retrieval, retrieval-augmented generation, large- language-model workflows, embeddings, or explainable matching methods.
- Experience developing researcher profiles, company intelligence, recommendation systems, knowledge bases, or research-information products.
- Experience with data governance, master-data management, entity resolution, data dictionaries, or provenance tracking.
- Experience with tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Streamlit, FastAPI, Snowflake, BigQuery, cloud platforms, or comparable data and visualization technologies.
- Experience working with higher-education, research, innovation, or industry partnership information
- Proven experience using Python and SQL for data preparation, analysis, or application development.
- Experience integrating, cleaning, validating, structuring, and documenting data from multiple sources.
- Experience applying machine-learning, natural-language-processing, semantic-search, information-retrieval, or related analytical methods.
