Department: WCAS History

Africa Since 1750 (East, Southern, Central)

The Department of History at Northwestern University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure in the history of Africa since 1750 whose research focuses on one or more regions in East, Southern, or Central Africa. We will prioritize applications from scholars who work in African languages and who concentrate on the period prior to the First World War.

The successful candidate will teach four courses annually over the course of three academic quarters, advise graduate students, and contribute to a vibrant interdisciplinary community of Africanists both in and beyond the History Department. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in History or an adjacent field by the time of appointment. This is a full-time position starting September 1, 2027.

A letter of application, CV, writing sample (no longer than an article or dissertation/book chapter), and three letters of recommendation (sent separately) must be submitted electronically via the link on our departmental website at http://www.history.northwestern.edu/ by October, 15, 2026.

Please address any questions regarding this position to Annerys Cano at annerys.cano@northwestern.edu.
