Position Summary


The Department of Ophthalmology and
Visual Sciences
at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center is
expanding and seeks an outstanding Comprehensive Ophthalmologist to join our
rapidly growing academic department.

The successful candidate will join a
collaborative and dynamic ophthalmology service dedicated to providing
exceptional comprehensive eye care to the patients of New Mexico and the
surrounding region. As part of the UNM Health System, the Eye Clinic offers a
rewarding blend of tertiary referral care and safety-net medicine, providing
exposure to a broad spectrum of ophthalmic disease while serving one of the
most medically diverse populations in the Southwest.

The incoming physician will have the
opportunity to establish a busy comprehensive ophthalmology practice with
significant opportunities for growth across the full spectrum of comprehensive
medical and surgical ophthalmic care, working collaboratively with a highly
collegial team of subspecialty faculty. The successful candidate will share
call responsibilities with existing faculty and actively participate in the
education of residents and medical students.

Our department has recently
established a three-resident-per-class ophthalmology residency program and
continues to experience significant growth. The successful candidate will have
a unique opportunity to make an immediate impact in a state with tremendous
need for comprehensive ophthalmic services while helping shape the future of
ophthalmology education and patient care in New Mexico.

demonstrate a strong commitment to outstanding patient care, teaching, and
scholarly activity within an academic environment. Opportunities for clinical
research and clinical trial participation are available through our growing
research enterprise, which includes dedicated research coordinators,
technicians, and faculty collaborators.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for position:

  • Completion of an accredited
    Ophthalmology Residency Program
  • Board certified or board eligible in
    Ophthalmology
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the
    State of New Mexico
  • Eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications for
position:

  • Experience in clinical education and
    resident teaching
  • Experience in clinical research
  • Experience providing comprehensive
    ophthalmology care and performing cataract surgery and other procedures
    commonly performed by comprehensive ophthalmologists
  • A demonstrated commitment to
    cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to
    the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
