About the RoleUCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the Network Engineering and Technology Services (NETS) Network Technician I role. This position is an entry-level position providing support for the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and documentation of network and datacenter infrastructure and equipment. Under direct supervision, this role performs well-defined technical tasks (including basic assembly, cabling, and testing of network systems and components) following established procedures and documentation.

This position is primarily on-site, requiring 4-5 days per week in the office to support hands-on tasks and direct supervision, with limited remote flexibility as circumstances allow.

NETS is responsible for the planning, engineering, installation, operation, and maintenance of state-of-the-art networking and data communications facilities at UCAR/NCAR.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Key Responsibilities

Network Engineering and Telecommunications Services Support

  • Work as part of a team performing installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of network service systems, following established NETS and industry procedures and guidelines.

  • Assist in addressing UCAR IT and computing support requirements as assigned through a work request system.

  • Assist with equipment assembly, disassembly, and component replacement.

  • Perform network testing and certification with supervision.

  • Receive incoming shipments, verifies, and inventories as necessary.

  • Participate in team meetings.

  • May occasionally be called upon to render service before or after scheduled hours.

Network and Infrastructure Installation

  • As directed by NETS Technicians, Engineers, and Management, support installation, relocation, and removal of IT infrastructure and equipment at all UCAR sites - including network cabling, cabling pathways, racks, cabinets, communications tray, conduit systems, and related pathways.

Network Documentation and Problem Identification

  • Contribute to maintaining and updating the asset management system and network infrastructure inventory.

  • Read and interpret schematic and wiring diagrams to identify and isolate basic problems and interconnections between equipment.

  • Report variances or identified problems.

  • Label equipment and infrastructure per NETS standards.

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;

  • 3 months of relevant experience, training, or education

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with basic diagnostic, hand, and power tools (e.g., multimeters, soldering tools, wiring tools, small electric tools) and construction/fabrication techniques as applied to networking environments.

  • Familiarity with computers, the Internet, and standard business applications (e.g., Google and Microsoft suites).

  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally, including understanding and acting on instructions and using email and other electronic communication tools.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and build positive, productive relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

  • Ability to analyze and solve basic problems logically.

  • Ability to install, set up, maintain, and/or move equipment either individually or with a partner.

  • Ability to operate material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to UCAR safety policies, procedures, and training content to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Value continuous learning and self-improvement.

  • Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends.

Desired, but not required (Training may be required, if needed.)

  • Basic skills in configuring Cisco and Juniper network devices
