How can you make an impact?
McGraw Hill, the leading provider of digital and print educational resources, is looking for a Prompt Engineer who specializes in exploring, prototyping, and validating AI solutions for operational efficiency before they advance to production or roadmap consideration. This role collaborates with the Digital Enterprise Services group (DES), PDP teams, AI product owners, and external suppliers to experiment with prompt strategies, test the feasibility of AI applications, and establish proofs of concept. Through rapid prototyping and iterative testing, this position determines the viability and potential impact of AI initiatives and builds organizational knowledge through hands-on training and best practice development.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What you will be doing:

  • Partner with DES, PDP teams, AI product owners, and external suppliers to prototype and test AI solutions, providing guidance on prompt engineering approaches and feasibility assessment.
  • Design and execute proof-of-concept projects to evaluate the technical feasibility and business value of proposed AI initiatives focused on operational efficiency.
  • Develop and refine prompt engineering techniques through experimentation and testing, documenting findings and best practices for future implementation.
  • Conduct rapid prototyping and iterative testing to validate AI solution concepts before they are considered for the roadmap or moved into production.
  • Provide training and knowledge transfer to stakeholders on prompt engineering, AI capabilities, and limitations based on prototype learnings.
  • Basic instructional design literacy sufficient to collaborate with a learning designer.
  • Analyze prototype performance and document recommendations regarding feasibility, resource requirements, and potential operational impact to inform decision-making.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science or a related discipline required, with an advanced degree in a relevant field preferred, demonstrating a strong academic foundation in AI and data-driven disciplines.
  • 3+ years of proven experience in data science, machine learning, or AI development, with demonstrated expertise in prompt engineering and working with Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Strong prototyping and proof-of-concept development skills, with the ability to quickly assess technical feasibility and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent communication and training delivery skills, paired with an experimental mindset and strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities to drive innovation and informed decision-making.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time as required for team meetings, conferences, and stakeholder engagements
  • Preferred: Proficiency with AI platforms such as OpenAI, Azure AI, or similar technologies, along with knowledge of Python, data analysis tools, and AI development frameworks.
  • Preferred: Experience with rapid prototyping methodologies and agile experimentation, enabling iterative development and fast validation of AI-driven solutions.
  • Preferred: Experience evaluating and documenting technical feasibility studies, as well as familiarity with operational efficiency or process automation initiatives to drive organizational impact.
