How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Senior Engineering Technician, you will serve as a technical expert supporting research, development, validation, and continuous improvement of heat exchanger products and systems through laboratory and field testing. You will independently execute complex laboratory and field testing, maintain testing equipment and facilities, analyze and report technical data, and partner with engineering teams to validate product performance, quality, and safety.

In addition to laboratory responsibilities, you will serve as a technical resource for engineers and technicians by mentoring others, supporting product development, maintaining laboratory operations, recommending equipment and process improvements, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.

This role encourages innovation and continuously improves efficiency of technical support, monitors advances of technology and competition, and supports global and acquisition-related technical issues in areas of expertise.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  1. Advanced Laboratory Testing, Product Validation, & Data Analysis
  • Independently set up, execute, and troubleshoot complex laboratory and field testing for heat exchangers, components, and related systems.
  • Calibrate, verify, operate, and maintain laboratory instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and specialized testing equipment.
  • Prepare technical reports, analyze test data, document procedures, and recommend product or testing improvements.
  1. Laboratory Operations, Equipment, & Facility Support
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, tooling, and facility infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Coordinate purchasing of laboratory materials and recommend facility upgrades and capital improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with ANSI, ASTM, ISO, OSHA, and company standards while supporting facility maintenance activities.
  1. Technical Leadership, Collaboration, & Continuous Improvement
  • Serve as a technical resource for engineering teams supporting product development, validation, and field testing.
  • Train and mentor technicians, interns, contractors, and engineering personnel while supporting customer demonstrations and evaluations.
  • Develop and improve laboratory procedures, data acquisition tools, and testing processes to increase efficiency, quality, and safety.

What we are looking for (Required/Ideal Experience, Skills, Education)

We each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technology, or related technical field preferred
  • Technical certificate, or equivalent experience in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or industrial technology

Required Experience & Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation
  • Extensive laboratory testing or engineering technician experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to read engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, calibration methods, and data acquisition systems.
  • Strong Microsoft Office, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Ideal Experience & Skills

  • Experience operating man lifts, cranes, forklifts, or scaffolding
  • Experience in laboratory, research, or industrial testing environments
  • Exposure to HVAC, heat exchangers, refrigeration, or industrial manufacturing environments
  • Understanding of data acquisition systems, operating/programming VFDs and/or PLC systems
  • Programming knowledge (e.g., Visual Basic, HP Basic, Quick Basic)
  • Experience mentoring technicians and supporting cross-functional engineering teams.

Travel & Working Environment

  • Hands-on test/research/fabrication/shop environment
  • The position may require working occasionally outside normal work hours.
    • (Some nights/weekends due to situational test requirements)
  • Lifting up to 70 pounds.
  • Bending and stooping.
  • Working at heights less than 50 feet above ground.
  • Work with exposure to bad weather and/or excessive heat.
