THOR Solutions is actively seeking a Technical Instructor (Marine Welding & Systems) to provide full-time technical and professional support services at theMid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC)in Norfolk, VA.

This position is contingent upon contract award, anticipated for September 2026.

Typical Responsibilities: Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
  • Prepare and deliver instructional programs for technical courses in welding, brazing, and other ship fundamentals, ensuring all allotted time is used effectively.
  • Ensure students receive high-quality education through effective in-class instruction, hands-on training, and up-to-date learning materials.
  • Train students and shipboard personnel on safety requirements, standard maintenance procedures, and the use of tools and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain classroom techniques that reflect professionalism, good discipline, and high motivation. Incorporate current, real-world examples into the teaching process.
  • Administer, grade, and critique examinations; prepare and administer remedial assignments as needed.
  • Submit written recommendations for curriculum updates to ensure consistency with the latest industry and naval standards.
  • Examine and troubleshoot equipment to determine the extent of repairs, identify necessary materials, and estimate the time required for completion.
  • Identify and resolve technical problems, providing recommendations to management for concurrence and approval.
  • Be responsible for all personnel welding/brazing records, including qualifications, re-qualifications, quarterly updates, and exams.
  • Ensure all safety requirements and practices are adhered to within the shop area.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of all Naval welding/brazing standards and instructions (e.g., Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual (JFMM), MILSTD- 22D, MIL-STD-1689A, S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248, 074-AR-GIB-010/278, NAVSEA 0900-001-700, S9086-CH-STM-010/074 VOL 1&3, WP- 278, WP-1698, BP-7000, MIL-STD-2035, T9074-AS-GIB-101/271).
  • Conduct quarterly self-assessments and correct discrepancies found during official audits.
  • Assist with the maintenance, utilization, and inventory of department tools and equipment.
Location:Onsite at Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) in Norfolk, VA.

Typical Physical Activity:Mix of desk/computer work in an office environment and visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: repetitive motion, traversing shipboard environments (e.g. confined spaces, ladders, hatches), or vision.

Typical Pay Range:The anticipated pay for this position in the identified location(s) is $28.53/hour. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience. This position is covered under the Service Contract Act (SCA), and will additionally receive $5.09/hour in "health and welfare" benefits.

Existing SECRET Security Clearance Required: This position requires an existing active or interim Secret security clearance prior to hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position. A candidate without a clearance but with highly relevant experience may be considered, but still must obtain a clearance prior to hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High School or equivalent.
  • Ten (10) years of full-time, hands-on welding and brazing experience onboard naval vessels. Prior Military or shipyard experience is preferred.
  • Mandatory Certifications:
    • Must be certified or be able to certify 6G P-73 and 4F/5F P-14 carbon steel (SMAW) weld tests.
    • Must be certified or be able to certify 4F/5F P-14 and 6G P-73 carbon and stainless (GTAW) weld tests.
    • Must be certified or be able to certify vertical and horizontal Grade III, IV, and V brazing tests.
    • Must be certified or be able to certify in welder and brazer Workmanship requirements.
