A vacancy exists for the position of Line Locator in the Line Locating Department. Please see the below job description and outline for the interview.

Normal Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of recent experience locating underground utilities (must have located within the last 6 months)
  • Ability to learn to locate and identify underground electrical utility wires using electrical utility maps and special electronic locator equipment
  • Possess a valid, up-to-date driver's license
  • Ability to learn to read blueprints, facility maps, or engineering drawings to assist in locating buried lines
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and lift for extended periods of time
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills

There will be a two-part testing procedure required for this position. The first step is a written exam followed by a behavioral based interview. Each part of the testing process must be passed to progress to the next.

We are providing a study outline to prepare for the computer test and the behavioral based interview. The outline is designed to maximize test results by centralizing study times in the areas listed below:

Behavioral Based Interview

The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating our Core Competencies. In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents. We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required. This type of interview is different than those that you may have taken in the past.

Position Description

Locates underground facilities, makes preliminary dig-in investigations, reads and identifies symbols on system maps.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Locate and identify underground wires using maps and special electronic locator equipment.

  • Reads blueprints, facility maps, or engineering drawings to assist in locating buried lines.

  • Responds to Arizona811 requests by driving to sites and locating lines.

  • Independently interprets requests from Arizona811

  • Questions the requestor as needed to obtain complete information.

  • Determines where locates are, thereby ensuring protection of utilities.

  • Provides follow-up as needed.

  • Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers accurately and professionally.

  • Communicates relevant information to excavation personnel or other appropriate authorities.

  • Maintain accurate records of work time and client identities to allow proper assignment of charge codes.

  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

  • Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures.

  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

  • Ability to distinguish between secondary and primary voltages.

  • Maintain a high level of awareness and responsibility to the Company and its customers.

  • Ability to follow written procedures and oral instructions.
