About the Job:
This position is in the Department of Counseling Services, a part of Student Life at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). The employee provides counseling (assessment/diagnosis, treatment) to UMD students; maintains appropriate charting and paperwork; provides crisis response intervention (both to individual students and campus-wide crises); implements therapy or education groups; and provides consultation to students, staff, faculty and administration with a special focus on outreach to underrepresented/underserved students.

This position will be a temporary position working up to 32 hours per week for a total of 67 days or less per year.

Location and Work environment: This is an in-person position located within the Health Services Building at UMD in Duluth, MN.

Primary Responsibilities:

Individual and group counseling and psychotherapy- 90%

  • Intake/Assessment/diagnostic interviews to collect data pertaining to presenting problem, general health, psychological functioning, psychosocial history, academic functioning.
  • Treatment of identified issue; determines appropriate short-term therapeutic work for students with various psychological concerns. Maintain awareness of developmental and psychological issues for a college population.
  • Participates in the provision of mental health triage services; this responsibility is shared with other counselors on a rotating basis.
  • Referral to other providers, as needed: requires knowledge of services on campus pertaining to student; requires knowledge of other local resources (i.e. other mental health providers, treatment programs, medical facilities, social services, advocacy services, etc.)
  • Completion of paperwork (intake summaries, progress notes, termination summaries, referrals, etc.): requires effective writing skills; time management; typing/computer skills; knowledge of UMD Health Services documentation systems.
  • Collaboration with other service providers (advisors, student affairs, medical, psychiatric, disability and career services, etc.) to coordinate care.

Departmental collaboration and administration- 10%

  • Attend all departmental and divisional meetings to stay up to date with on-going work expectations and initiatives
  • Serve on appropriate committees and task forces as appropriate to further counseling services outreach efforts across campus
  • Special projects as assigned
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years.
  • Minnesota Social Worker Licensure is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of different socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international and LGBTQ backgrounds, including knowledge and sensitivity to multicultural issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical service, consultation and outreach to diverse college student population
  • Experience working in a college health environment

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $28.00- $30.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
