Job Summary

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Burn Tech Per Diem provides patient care to acutely ill/injured burn patients 7days/week, 365 days/year; the Burn Tech Per Diem primarily assists the Registered Nurse (RN) in providing wound care. This includes coordinating dressing changes, setting up dressing supplies, assisting with dressing changes, applying topical medications and moisturizers under direct supervision of an RN, discarding soiled dressing materials and cleaning equipment. In addition, the Burn Tech Per Diem may transport patients, obtain vital signs, assist in ADL's, assist in equipment set-up (e.g. electro-cautery), manage supplies and equipment and apply and remove splints. Additionally, the position requires organizing, clerical duties, cleaning, stocking work area in the unit, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • No minimum education requirements
  • Paid or volunteer clinical experience in a burn unit, surgical ICU, or trauma unit
  • Knowledge of supplies and equipment used for burn wound care, splint, and positioning
  • Must have knowledge and ability to apply sterile technique, including wrapping and autoclaving of surgical instruments.
  • Ability to work with wounds and dressings to care for burn patients.
  • Skill and ability to perform functions commensurate with training and experience as a hospital assistant; including setting up equipment and instruments; taking and recording vital signs and health statistics, obtaining, labeling and processing specimens, and preparing requisitions for processing, preparing patients for exams and procedures, independently performing and assisting physicians with exams and procedures as described in this position and administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess patient care needs and prioritize resources for patient care.
  • Skills with taking precise and detailed photos to document wound progression.
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines and when interacting with challenging situations.
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain a friendly, welcoming environment for clinic/department customers, to demonstrate an interested, understanding, compassionate manner, to maintain a courteous and calm demeanor and to use a proactive approach to negotiate with and persuade others to take required action.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent burn technician experience and/or currently enrolled as a nursing student
  • Knowledge of practice and protocols related to Burn Unit environment
  • Knowledge of the nursing process

Department Overview

The UC Davis Regional Burn Center also known as Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center, provides comprehensive care to burn patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings as well as ongoing support through our outreach program.

The Burn Center is verified by The American Burn Association (ABA) and American College of Surgeons (ACS). The program specializes in all burns including, scald, chemical, electrical, flame burns, frost bite, burn reconstruction, inhalation injury and exfoliative disorders such as toxic epidermal necrolysis/Steven's Johnson Syndrome, and Purpura Fulminans. The department is involved in a wide spectrum of clinical research for advancing burn treatment. Our program provides fellowships in burns that trains the burn surgeons of the future, as well as nursing preceptorships.

The facility has: 13,000 square feet and 12 ICU beds in private rooms overhead infrared heating panels and thermostats in each room to keep patients and the room warm, as burned skin and tissues do not regulate body temperature well. Advanced ventilation system which continually cycles and cleans air to maintain an optimal setting and help prevent infections. The Burn center includes a physical therapy treatment room, outpatient burn wound clinic and a hydrotherapy room with state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
