This is a position-specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) position/function only. All interested persons will need to re-apply for any future recruitment conducted for this classification.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes, across the State of Maryland. Nature of Work: The Marine Generator Repair Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of boats, generators, all-terrain vehicles, and motorcycles with all systems associated.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Install complete assemblies such as axles, engines, transmissions, etc.;
  • Check, repair or replace various standard components and sub-assemblies;
  • Conduct electronic engine analyses and various specialized tests;
  • Test and repair computer controlled engines;
  • Repair and install high voltage electrical systems, including ignition switches, wiring, and other electronic equipment;
  • Diagnose and collect data such as engine hours or trouble codes to determine scope of repairs needed;
  • Complete records for work orders and repair orders;
  • Repair specialized equipment such as portable generators, gasoline pumps, water pumps, motorcycles, ATVs, generators and boats;
  • Winterize boats and repair any plumbing on board;
  • Troubleshoot and fix issues with gas, diesel and propane generators, including the engine, fuel systems and electronic controls for inboard and outboard engines;
  • Perform standard preventive maintenance services; and
  • Test all equipment repaired before releasing it from the shop.

Employees in this position will report to the Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I. The current vacancy is located in Cecil County, MD.

Employees are considered "Essential Employees" and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours in order to maintain and repair equipment. This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion that is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside a building. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing 70 pounds assisted and unassisted.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience in the maintenance, inspection, diagnostic, and repair of generators ranging from 5 kW to 850 kW, diesel powered equipment, marine engines and associated electrical systems.

Licenses & Certifications

  1. Employees are assigned duties that require the operation of motor vehicles. Employees will be required to possess and maintain a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland as a condition of employment. Applicants must list the license number and date of expiration on the application.

  2. Employees are required to possess and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated.

  3. Employees who are required to function in the capacity of Commercial Vehicle Inspector may be required to obtain and maintain their Commercial Vehicle Inspector's License.

  4. Employees will be required to obtain and maintain the following training and certifications during the probationary period:
  • Asbestos Certification
  • Arc Flash Training
  • Boater Safety Course
  • ATV Safety Course

Special Requirements

  1. Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

  2. Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency callback requirements.

  3. Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

  4. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which require the individual to be examined by a physician after an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

  5. Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

  6. Employees in these classifications are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
