Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class healthcare professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients.

The Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is the focal point for education, research and team science involving biomedical data sciences and informatics. The department's 15 full-time faculty are experts in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and clinical informatics, and are the home of the PhD program in Biomedical Informatics, and the PhD program in Biostatistics and Data Sciences. The department and college provide rich collaborative opportunities in basic, translational, and clinical research.

The Department of Biostatistics, Health Informatics and Data Sciences is seeking a full-time Biomedical Informatics Application Developer (BIAD). The Biomedical Informatics Application Developer (BIAD) is responsible for developing and implementing a precision database with AI generative capabilities to support predictive analytics and advance patient care.

Essential Functions

* Apply biomedical informatics technical standards, methodologies, and principles to research-specific program needs, objectives, and outcomes.
* In collaboration with central IT, develop and maintain intermediate to advanced IT application and programs from detailed specifications to meet research requirements and support user needs and initiatives; create detailed technical design specifications.Develop and/or implement components, succinct, timely programming code that is logical and optimizes programming resources and meets user requirements; work with user to test and debug programs.
* Work with central IT to ensure that any new systems or software updates are reviewed to ensure compliance with security and architectural standards for the university.
* Analyze client operations to understand their strengths and weaknesses to uncover opportunities for improvements; assess client needs utilizing a structured requirements process (gathering, analyzing, documenting, and managing changes).
* Translate business and technical requirements into test cases, test scenarios and scripts, code, and document custom test automation frameworks.
* Write documentation to provide user support for new or modified programs and production/operations procedures responsible for devising or modifying procedures to solve complex problems. Document and complete knowledge transfer to production support.
* Adhere to quality assurance best practices, such as unit testing, user acceptance testing, documenting code, participating in code reviews, creating test cases, and partaking in other activities including troubleshooting, debugging, and leveraging test environments for manual and automated testing.
* Specific to biomedical informatics research applications and healthcare quality projects, install and configure new, modified or software releases, solutions, and/or updates including third party; may provide hardware support to accomplish some duties. Deploy new modules, upgrades, and fixes to the production environment. Perform script maintenance and updates due to changes in requirements or implementations.
* Evaluate new and existing applications and platforms and provide recommendations for improving performance by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions, and assisting in the scope of modifications.
* Evaluate and supplement vendor supplied documentation for third party software; may work withvendors to resolve problems and develop solutions.

* Assist in establishing requirements, methods and procedures for routine maintenance and production support of assigned systems; perform ongoing routine application maintenance tasks to ensure minimal downtime and loss of productivity and service.
* Partner with central IT professionals to resolve any related hardware, software, user access, or other issues.
* Participate and collaborate in project planning processes (such as Agile, Scrum, Extreme, RAD, etc.).

Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.
  • Six (6) years of relevant education, work experience, and/or other specialized training can fulfill minimum education and experience requirements.
Required Experience
  • Two (2) years of relevant work experience.
Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Clear understanding of HIPAA and other laws that outline patient data privacy and security. Experience with database structures and query logic.
  • Experience in data modeling, ontologies, various data schemas, and clinical data standards such as ICD-10, LOINC, RxNorm, etc. as well as network transport protocols including FHIR.
