The Department of Biological Sciences is a teaching and research department that offers multiple educational, research and outreach programs in alignment with core guiding principles of Rutgers University - Newark. Additionally, the department offers Ph.D. and MS graduate programs that provide advanced scholarly and research training in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Laboratory/Technical Assistant. A Laboratory/Technical Assistant reports to the Principal Investigator under general supervision. This position provides technical support for biomedical research projects by applying established scientific methods and laboratory techniques.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Performs routine and multistep experimental procedures, including sample preparation, biochemical and molecular assays, and data collection.
  • Maintains and propagates cell cultures and other biological specimens; prepares tissues, reagents, and experimental materials for analysis; and assists with experimental setup and execution.
  • Assisting with in vivo studies involving live animals, including routine handling, husbandry coordination, and preparation for experimental procedures in compliance with institutional animal care and use guidelines.
  • Effectively and efficiently conducts routine and multistep laboratory experiments, including molecular, cellular, and biochemical assays
  • Ensuring accurate record-keeping, proper maintenance of laboratory equipment, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
  • Supporting related technical activities, including basic data management and coordination of laboratory operations, as needed.

Salary Details $42,000.00 to $47,000.00

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in a scientific/technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests, or other technical work may be substituted for the degree.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires ability to follow established laboratory protocols and apply basic scientific methods and techniques.
  • Requires experience with molecular and/or cellular biology techniques, including immunohistochemical analysis on animal tissues, PCR, genotyping, cell culture, and basic biochemical assays.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Experience with data organization, basic data analysis, and laboratory maintenance practices.
  • Willingness and ability to adhere to institutional safety and compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a biomedical research laboratory.
  • Experience working with live animals, including mouse handling, colony maintenance, basic husbandry, and genotyping.
  • Familiarity with institutional and regulatory guidelines related to animal research (e.g., IACUC).

Equipment Utilized

  • Laboratory equipment commonly used in biomedical research, including cell and tissue culture systems, biosafety cabinets, CO incubators, and sterile technique tools.
  • Microscopy equipment, including brightfield and fluorescence microscopes, and imaging systems such as gel documentation systems (e.g., Bio-Rad ChemiDoc) for protein and DNA analysis.
  • Molecular and biochemical instrumentation, including standard PCR machines (thermocyclers), gel electrophoresis apparatus, DNA/protein sonicators, centrifuges and pipettors.
  • Protein biochemistry equipment for Western blotting, dot blotting, and agarose gel analysis.
  • Additional equipment includes autoclaves for sterilization, glassware washer and standard laboratory instruments for sample preparation.
  • Experience with computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office and basic data analysis tools, is required; familiarity with electronic lab record-keeping and inventory management systems is desirable.
  • Knows or will learn any and all equipment, software, and specialized materials needed to support the effective and efficient performance of this position.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The laboratory environment involves exposure to common hazards associated with chemicals and preserved biological samples.
  • Adherence to established safety procedures is required at all times.
  • The incumbent will complete institutional biosafety and IACUC training to ensure safe handling of chemicals, biological materials, and animal research procedures.
  • The position requires the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds and to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Designated carts and trolleys are available for transporting heavy items, including deliveries, laboratory supplies, and equipment, to and from washing/autoclaving areas.
