QA/QC Inspector II

ACCO Engineered Systems
$38.28/hr-$48.13/hr
United States, Nevada, Sparks
1410 Greg St. #419 (Show on map)

Job Summary:

The QA/QC Inspector II plans and performs the inspection of an assigned project, system, or shop scope and owns the resulting record set. The position represents ACCO for pipe and equipment installation, welding and brazing inspection, and oversight of subcontractor installation and quality.

The position participates in the general contractor's project quality program, documents installation activities, and maintains the objective evidence that supports acceptance, testing, and turnover of the assigned scope.

QA/QC Inspector II is the working inspection level, above Inspector I and below Inspector III. Most ACCO projects carry one inspector, and this position is built to be that inspector: it decides what needs inspecting within its assigned scope, sequences it against the construction schedule, and is accountable for the completeness of the record without anyone else on site. Where an Inspector I is also assigned, this position gives that person daily technical direction; where an Inspector III is assigned, it works to the inspection plan that position sets.

QA/QC supports fabrication, installation and project management. Those groups are this position's customers inside ACCO, and what they build is what reaches the contractual customer. The position works as part of the project team - available, responsive, and practical about how the work gets built - not as an outside check on it. Findings are raised to be resolved. Getting to the work early, before it is covered, is part of the job.

Field and shop personnel take day-to-day direction from local project leadership (Project Management, Foreperson, General Foreperson, or Superintendent) on a dotted-line basis: where to be, when, and how the day is coordinated, with site adherence to appropriate conduct and safety in mind. Inspection decisions, acceptance and rejection, and the quality record run through the QA/QC line to the assigned QA/QC Inspector III, then the QA/QC Area Supervisor and the QA/QC Regional Manager. Where the two pull against each other the QA/QC line governs the quality decision, and the conflict is raised the same day rather than settled on site.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspection planning and execution

Plan and conduct the inspection, examination, and testing required for the assigned scope, sequenced against the construction schedule.

Identify the hold and witness points applicable to the assigned scope from the Inspection and Test Plan, and ensure they are honored.

Perform and record visual examination of welded, brazed, soldered, and mechanical joints; fit-up and alignment; supports and hangers; bolt-up and torque; and general workmanship.

Perform receiving inspection and maintain the confirmed compliant material log for the assigned scope.

Coordinate and witness pressure testing, cleaning, flushing, and blowing in accordance with the applicable procedure.

Coordinate nondestructive examination requests, witness examination where required, and review third-party reports for completeness and correct acceptance criteria.

Perform first-in inspection on new crews, new processes, and new material to identify errors before they are repeated.

Other duties as assigned by QA/QC leadership, in conjunction with the project team.

  • Documentation and records

Submit a daily inspection report with photographs on every project day worked, filed the same day.

Maintain the weld log and weld map current with installed work, including welder traceability for every joint.

Maintain the inspection request and notification log for the assigned scope.

Document nonconformances with description, location, code or specification reference, and photographic evidence; track them to closure and record the closure evidence.

Assemble test packages and turnover documentation progressively as work is installed rather than at closeout.

Review design documentation, submittals, and vendor documentation against stated requirements and raise discrepancies before installation.

  • Coordination

Engage with the general contractor's quality representative on inspection planning, compliance, nonconformance management, and audits for the assigned scope.

Attend project meetings covering upcoming activities, status, and deadlines, and report inspection demand for the coming three weeks.

Provide inspection demand input to the QA/QC three-week look-ahead for the assigned project.

Communicate significant issues promptly to QA/QC leadership, with a recommendation where one is warranted.

Provide project quality expectations, coaching, and day-to-day work direction to an assigned Inspector I.

  • Program and development

Maintain a working knowledge of the codes, specifications, and industry standards applicable to the assigned work.

Maintain personal certification and training currency and act on expiry notifications when received.

Recommend process improvements identified during inspection activities.

Participate in ACCO's safety programs and demonstrate a commitment to a goal of ZERO injuries or incidents.

  • Quality Authority

Identify and document nonconforming conditions on the assigned scope and prepare the nonconformance report, with code reference and evidence sufficient for issue and disposition.

Nonconformance reports are issued and dispositioned by the QA/QC Area Supervisor or above jointly with the Project Team. This position identifies, documents, and prepares the report; it does not issue or disposition one.

Reject material and workmanship that does not conform to the specification, submittal, drawing, or applicable code.

Place a hold on work and require that work not proceed past a hold or witness point until the inspection is performed and recorded.

Require re-inspection or retest following repair or rework and stop nonconforming work in progress with immediate notification to the Inspector III and Project Manager.

Submit inspection requests and schedule third-party examination in coordination with QA/QC leadership.

  • Limits of Authority

This position does not:

Approve, revise, or issue welding procedure specifications or procedure qualification records.

Qualify welders or brazers, unless holding a current CWI and specifically delegated in writing by the Director of QA/QC.

Approve repairs, deviations, waivers, or field changes to the approved design or procedure.

Issue, disposition, or close a nonconformance report - those are decided by the QA/QC Area Supervisor or above jointly with the Project Team.

Sign the final quality letter or turnover acceptance or commit ACCO to a schedule or cost position.
