Position Summary: The Project Accountant serves as a financial partner and advisor to Project Managers and Finance leadership, supporting the financial success of HED's projects throughout the project lifecycle. This role independently manages a portfolio of projects of varying size, complexity, contract type, and risk while maintaining accurate project financial information and ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable accounting standards. The Project Accountant is responsible for project financial planning and forecasting, revenue recognition, profitability analysis, and identifying financial and operational risks. The position interprets financial results, develops actionable recommendations, and works with Project Managers and business leaders to improve project performance. Essential Functions:
  • Review and validate project setup within the ERP system, including contract terms, fee and billing structures, project phases, budgets, revenue methods, consultant commitments, and other financial attributes
  • Partner with Project Managers to develop, maintain, and update project plans
  • Evaluate the reasonableness of project plans and forecasts by comparing planned performance with actual results
  • Monitor labor, consultant, reimbursable, and other project costs against budgets, forecasts, and contractual limits
  • Maintain project plan integrity and ensure approved changes, additional services, and contract modifications are reflected accurately and timely in project financial records
  • Lead recurring financial reviews with Project Managers and provide guidance on project planning, financial performance, revenue recognition, and risk mitigation
  • Perform month-end close activities including revenue recognition journal entries, reconciliations, WIP analysis, revenue reviews, and financial reporting
  • Review and analyze work-in-progress, backlog, earned and unbilled revenue, accounts receivable, and project profitability reports
  • Identify, recommend, and help implement process, reporting, system, and control improvements that enhance the accuracy, consistency, and efficiency of project accounting
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Project Managers, operational leaders, and Finance team members across the organization
  • Participate in testing and implementation of ERP enhancements, financial reports, dashboards, and related project accounting tools.
  • Develop documentation, procedures, and training materials related to project accounting processes and financial management practices.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies and internal controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA or progress toward CPA preferred
  • Seven + years of accounting experience in a project-based professional services environment preferred
  • Experience with Workday or comparable ERP system preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, Microsoft Excel, analytical, communication, and organizational skills

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in person
  • Visual acuity sufficient to perform computer-based accounting responsibilities
