The Lead Engineer - Product Design Engineer is responsible for driving the design and development of power converters, power inverters, associated gate drivers, and power control algorithms for Industrial Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) used in the energy extraction market.

This role requires deep expertise in power electronics, including AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC conversion technologies, power section architecture, fault management, and advanced control systems. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions that deliver reliable, efficient, and high-performance drive systems for demanding industrial applications.

As a Lead Engineer - Product Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Defining and validating power converter and inverter architectures, subcomponents, and performance characteristics for industrial applications

  • Leading analytical and design activities using established power electronics methodologies and technologies

  • Developing gate driver designs to ensure optimal performance and reliability of power electronic systems

  • Creating fault detection, protection, and signaling schemes to enhance system diagnostics and fault mitigation capabilities

  • Supporting the design and development of advanced power control algorithms for industrial variable speed drive applications

  • Collaborating with engineering teams to validate power section performance, reliability, and manufacturability

  • Communicating technical strategies and recommendations to senior leaders and cross-functional teams

  • Contributing to the development of technical documentation, white papers, and design guidelines related to power electronics systems

  • Working closely with supply chain and commercialization teams to support successful product introduction and lifecycle management

  • Driving innovation in power conversion technologies while ensuring compliance with quality, reliability, and performance requirements

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related engineering discipline

  • Demonstrate strong experience in power electronics design, including AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC conversion systems

  • Possess expertise in power converter and inverter architecture development and validation

  • Have experience developing gate drivers, fault detection systems, and protection schemes for power electronic applications

  • Demonstrate strong analytical, troubleshooting, and system-level design capabilities

  • Be able to effectively communicate technical concepts and influence cross-functional stakeholders

  • Have experience working collaboratively across engineering, product development, and supply chain organizations

Desired Characteristics

  • Proficiency with Altera FPGA design tools

  • Strong experience using MATLAB/Simulink and associated toolsets including:

    • SimPowerSystems

    • Simscape

    • Model Predictive Control Toolbox

    • Fuzzy Logic Toolbox

    • Stateflow Toolbox

    • Robust Control Toolbox

    • Neural Network Toolbox

  • Experience with LabVIEW and optimization tools such as AMPL and CPLEX

  • Knowledge of simulation and power systems analysis tools including:

    • PowerWorld Simulator

    • PSIM

    • PSCAD

    • ETAP

    • SABER

  • Proficiency in C programming language

  • Knowledge of intelligent, advanced, and model-based control techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions in complex power electronics and industrial drive applications
