Position Highlights The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is accepting applications for Adjunct Instructor positions to teach undergraduate Spanish language courses in different modalities, heritage language, and general education courses. Instructors are required to teach in-person and, if needed, online courses. These positions may extend from part-time (.50 FTE) to full-time (1.0 FTE) for the Fall and/or Spring semesters of the 2026-2027 academic year. Hiring will depend on the availability of funding, course enrollments and the needs of the department.

The Spanish and Portuguese department offers undergraduate majors in both languages with coursework in literature, linguistics, translation and interpretation; as well as MA and PhD degrees. The department boasts one of the largest Spanish and Portuguese language programs in the nation, one of the most comprehensive Heritage Learner programs, an innovative suite of online courses, and long-standing study abroad programs in Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Spain.

Note: Depending on the duration of employment, the selected candidate(s) will either be eligible for limited or full benefits. Individuals hired for at least 90 days but less than 6 months will receive limited benefits. Individuals hired for six months or longer will receive full benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach
    two to four undergraduate Spanish courses per semester following the
    department's course syllabi, standard and practices.
  • Maintain
    gradebook on D2L and office hours for students.
  • Administer
    and grade assignments and exams promptly.
  • Attend
    instructional meetings, training, and orientation.
  • Attend
    and participate in departmental events.
  • Engage
    in recruitment and retention of majors and minors.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Head.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, and community.
  • Demonstrated student-centered pedagogical knowledge.
  • Ability to support recruitment and retention of undergraduate students.
  • Knowledge of effective and innovative approaches to teaching college-level Spanish.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's
    degree in Spanish or related field.
  • Native
    or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Two (2) years of teaching and related duties experience (grading, lesson planning,
    course management).
  • Satisfactory completion of one graduate teaching
    methods course or a heritage pedagogy course.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in at least two (2) years of college teaching in Spanish (online, hybrid or in-person).
  • Experience with digital learning platforms (VHL, Cengage, Pearson, etc.).
  • Experience with learning management systems (D2L, Canvas, Blackboard, etc.).
  • A record of professional development activities for online teaching and/or course design (i.e., Quality Matters).
