Job Overview

The Senior Vascular Access Nurse is responsible for complex cases and meets all inpatient and outpatient vascular access requirements by vascular access assessment, planning, placement, and care for patients as assigned. Utilizing specialized knowledge, this role inserts PICCs, Extended Dwell Catheters (EDC), and peripheral IVs utilizing ultrasound guidance when necessary. Provides vascular access education and evaluation of interventions and outcomes. This role serves as a subject matter expert, clinical resource, and partner to the care team in determining the most optimal vascular access device and plan to meet the patient's needs.

    Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
    Hourly Range: $42.27 to $63.41

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients with difficult access or need for long term intravenous (IV) therapy for appropriate vascular access device.
  • Rounds to assess patients with central access lines and completes dressing changes.
  • Assesses patients and evaluates vascular access effectiveness, consulting with the clinical team to inform treatment and plan of care.
  • Participates in data tracking, ongoing assessment, and process improvement to ensure quality in care and services.
  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency in placing vascular access devices using ultrasound guided technology, particularly for patients with difficult access (PICC, EDC, Peripheral) or recommends alternate means of access.
  • Partners with staff nurses, providers, case managers and other team members to ensure early assessment for vascular access device selection and implementation based on the patient's plan of care.
  • Initiates appropriate education and instruction to patients and families, based upon evaluation to meet their learning needs.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and provides consultation, education, and/or assistance to clinical care teams regarding troubleshooting and management of vascular access devices.
  • Participates in research activities and unit-based quality improvement studies related to Vascular Access; participates in evaluation of new products.
  • Provides direction and oversight to the EMT - Vascular Access regarding care, prioritization, of the patient population that the Vascular Access team support.
  • Prepares and collects laboratory specimens.
  • Serves as a role model/preceptor for new staff and less experienced personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degrees
    • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Experience
    • Two (2) years of clinical nursing experience and two (2) years of vascular access experience.
    • Ultrasound IV experience preferred
  • Licenses & Certifications
    • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire.
    • VA-BC (Vascular Access Board Certification) preferred.
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
