Job Function Summary:

Supervises employees in highly technical sub-specialty area. Directly oversees all the technical operations of the laboratory, enforcing standard operating procedures and research methods. Responsible for laboratory meeting quality assurance standards.

Involves testing on clinical specimens for information about the health of a patient, for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Disciplines include chemistry, blood banking, hematology, microbiology, immunology, cytology, histology, pathology and cytogenetics. May include highly technical sub- specialty areas such as enzyme assay, steroid assay, radioimmunoassay, toxicology, electrophoresis, rheumatology, tissue typing, and virology.

Key Responsibilities

50 Supervise the technical work productivity and accuracy of the department section by maintaining equipment in operational status. Minimize downtime on the unit. Oversees troubleshooting and repair of instrumentation. Monitors/checks that all maintenance is performed on schedule by techs and outside vendors. Determine the need for back-up methods when primary instrumentation is down within 1-3 hours of initial downtime to ensure turn-around-times are met, review and maintain satisfactory quality control at all times. Assist Senior Supervisor in overseeing contracts and ordering of reagents and controls. Ensure that manual workload is recorded. Ensure that computer crash procedures are followed. Acts as first consultant for technical problems. Notify residents and/or medical directors of unusual technical and clinical problems. Ensure that laboratory surveys (e.g. CAP) are completed by the staff and answers are submitted by deadline. Review clinical lab scientists' work as needed. Complete IRs to document complaints, errors, injuries or variances from standard procedure. Develops competency assessment materials.
5 Oversee training of CLS's, HLT's and CLS trainees in the department. Establish training schedule with the Senior Supervisor, prepare an outline or checklist of materials on subject matter being taught. Review training checklists for completion and notify Sr Supervisor of any issues with training. Accumulate and employ suitable teaching materials.
20 Oversee new test validation and procedures and update existing test procedures. Ensures that procedures are updated, documentation is consistent and ensures that staff have reviewed procedures and signed off on tasks in Master Control. Develops new test procedures, oversees validation of new tests and analyzers. Assists with preparing EP evaluators reports and documents for lab director's approval. Coordinates the go-live date for new tests/instruments with vendor, LIS, and clinicians as needed. Ensures that staff are trained prior to go live. Performs IT and interface testing, validation of data entry and result transmission.
10 Oversees compliance in department. Reviews maintenance and temperature charts, maintains equipment and maintenance records, ensures that competency assessments are performed annually by staff, ensures that proficiency testing samples are completed by staff and submitted by the deadline.

Administrative duties: schedule staff to cover workload so turn-around-times are maintained, organize special projects and tests, designate days to do batch testing. Perform performance evaluation with Senior Supervisor at least once a year for each employee assigned. Updates and approves staff timesheets in timekeeping system. Minimize number of errors, consults with offender when errors are made to avoid further mistakes, reports in writing to Senior Supervisor when there are errors. Recommend appropriate corrective action. Maintains a minimum supply of inventory. Documents in writing and submit to supervisor poor performance of supervised personnel. Interview candidates for positions in Chemistry.
5 Additional duties include working as CLS or HLT as needed. Performs additional duties, projects and /or special assignments when requested by Senior Supervisor and completes them within an agreed time period. In the absence of Senior Supervisor, may temporarily assume some senior supervisory responsibilities.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area
  • Writing Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, and procedures
  • Ability to apply principles in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations
  • Ability to organize assigned staff and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner
  • Highly developed personal organizational skills
  • Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems
  • Proven ability to multi-task and reliably manage multiple projects through from inception to completion on schedule in a complex, challenging environment
  • Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities
  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical clinical specialty concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel
  • Ability to use laboratory's application programs
  • Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process
  • Interpersonal skills to independently convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters and interact with high level contacts from other organizations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of recent experience in the Chemistry section of which at least 3 years must have been in a supervisory position
  • Five years of recent CLS experience in high volume hospital clinical laboratory
  • Development of assays
  • Teaching, including orientation and training of employees
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications
  • Any recent CLS supervisory experience
  • Experience in automated equipment/methods in the area of specialty
  • Licensure in specialty area preferred

Required Licenses:

  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license
