Full-time, 10-month contract, faculty position that oversees both the long-term strategic planning and day-to-day supervision of the Lipscomb University Center for Speaking and Writing (CSW), serves on the Executive Committee of the Learning Commons, and assists the Lead Faculty for Writing in curricular design for POWERS and Introduction to University Writing. In addition, the Director carries a 17-hour teaching load, including the CSW Practicum course for writing and speaking consultants.



  • Reports to: Chair of English and Modern Languages
  • Education: M.A. in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Linguistics, or a related field required (Ph.D. strongly preferred)
  • Experience: At least one year of writing center experience and experience teaching composition at the collegiate level required (Experience in writing or speaking center administration and experience with developmental writers is preferred)


Primary Function:

The responsibilities of the Director of the Lipscomb University Center for Speaking and Writing (CSW) include designing the pedagogical structure, overseeing daily operations, and supervising and mentoring writing consultants, and serving as a vital part of the Learning Commons. Additional duties include designing and conducting writing workshops for University courses and organizations, coordinating with other University offices and departments, planning CSW outreach events for the University and/or community, updating scheduling software, the Writing Studio website, and social media, and managing the budget. The Director is expected to stay current on Writing and Speaking Center theory and pedagogy. Candidates with research interests in multilingual writers, online tutoring, new media studies, or multiliteracies are especially encouraged to apply.

The goal of the Lipscomb University CSW is to help clients, whatever their level of writing or subject matter, polish what they already do well in a welcoming, comfortable, and creative atmosphere, with a dedicated staff that will review written or spoken work interactively, objectively, and with patience and understanding. The CSW serves all members of the undergraduate and graduate community through a combination of synchronous in-person and online consultations.

  2. Duties and responsibilities

    1. Provide pedagogical oversight and logistical support for the CSW
    2. Manage the CSW budget
    3. Develop an assessment and strategic growth plan for the CSW
    4. Develop and organize outreach activities for the CSW across the University
    5. Recruit and hire undergraduate and graduate writing and speaking consultants across majors
    6. Provide training, ongoing professional development, supervision, and evaluation for writing consultants through Practicum and ongoing professional development
    7. Design writing resources for the CSW website, including videos and infographics
    8. Design and deliver writing or presenting workshops across the University
    9. Design writing diagnostic materials for University departments and writing individualized tutoring plans for students with long-term support needs
    10. Serve on the Learning Commons leadership team
