Medical Director Surgical Services - Pen Bay & Waldo Hospitals

This regional role, overseeing the teams at Pen Bay & Waldo Hospitals will:

  • Partner with the Practice Operations and OR Leadership to lead the administrative and clinical operations of their area to ensure quality of care, patient safety, provider and employee satisfaction and efficient use of resources. Responsible for addressing the needs of the clinicians and staff in their practice area while aligning individual efforts with the mission, vision, values, strategic goals, and organizational aims of MaineHealth.
  • Works closely with the practice managers and directors to ensure the day-to-day operations and performance of their practice area.
  • Works with practice operations on provider scheduling including coordination of applicable office-based schedules, call schedules, OR Block schedules, hospital coverage and after-hours coverage.
  • Working closely with the Senior Medical Director, Senior Director, & Recruitment staff, functions as the point person for provider recruitment in their practice area including screening of potential applicants, assisting in planning interviews, performing reference checks, and ensuring good communication with candidates throughout the recruitment process.
  • In conjunction with the practice managers participates in onboarding plan for any new providers to their practice area to ensure a smooth transition into the practice.
  • Facilitates and supports efforts to ensure the quality and safety as well as productivity and operational efficiency of their practice area with consideration of appropriate resource utilization.
  • Leads the evaluation process for providers in their practice areas - including any Focused Practice Performance Evaluation (FPPE), Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE), Productivity and Quality Metrics, and Review of Initial and Reappointment Applications for Credentialing (when applicable).
  • Advocates to administration for the needs of clinicians and staff and holds the organization accountable to the commitments the organization has made to the clinicians and staff.

  • Works with practice operations and Quality to address patient grievances and complaints.
  • Participates in appropriate leadership meetings and training and development opportunities.
  • Participates in annual evaluation of providers in practice, patient grievances, and leadership development opportunities.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  1. Education: Medical or Allied Health degree.
  2. Licensure and Certifications: Active Maine medical license and board certification in the relevant clinical specialty.
  3. Experience:
  • Minimum of five years in a medical leadership role within a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience in clinical administration, policy development, or quality improvement.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations, compliance standards, and financial management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage clinical operations effectively.

Advocating for Clinicians and the Organization

Performs a dual advocacy role by representing the needs of clinicians and care team members to administration and by communicating organizational needs and expectations back to clinicians and care teams to support accountability and optimal performance.
