Position Summary
The student will work with Dr. Marisol Juarez Rivera on a research project investigating how mineral diagenesis influences biosignature preservation in hot spring deposits. The project combines geobiology, sedimentology, and imaging-based analyses to better understand how evidence of past microbial life is preserved in the rock record.
The student will gain hands-on research experience through:
  • Analyzing biosedimentary samples
  • Assisting with sample preparation and laboratory workflows
  • Learning micro-CT imaging and 3D visualization techniques
  • Using Dragonfly software for data analysis and interpretation
  • Creating figures and data visualizations
  • Participating in research discussions and presenting findings to the research team
This position is intended to provide undergraduate students with experience in independent scientific research and exposure to analytical techniques used in geobiology and sedimentary geology.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Undergraduate student in Earth and Planetary Sciences or a related field
  • Interest in geobiology, sedimentology, astrobiology, or imaging-based analyses
  • Motivated to participate in independent research and collaborative lab work
  • Willingness to learn micro-CT imaging workflows and Dragonfly software
  • Ability to conduct laboratory sample preparation and follow research protocols
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to engage with data analysis and interpretation
Previous research experience or coding experience is welcome but not required.
