Duties/Responsibilities
Patient Testing

  • Perform designated waived Laboratory testing as trained and overseen by Technologist/Manager.
  • Follows specimen identification requirements, quality control and procedure details.
  • Accurately reports results into the laboratory information system (LIS) and the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Accurately completes procedures as outlined in laboratory procedure manual, within standard turnaround times.
  • Operates various types of laboratory analyzers and equipment.
  • Identifies and investigates possible causes of abnormal or unusual test results.
  • Organizes and prioritizes patient/specimen workflow.

  • Performs and documents quality assurance activities that include quality control data, accurate proficiency testing, equipment maintenance and system troubleshooting using manuals and/or technical service assistance.

Laboratory Clerk

  • Assumes responsibility for laboratory data by accurately reporting results into the laboratory information system (LIS) and the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Manages efficient, prompt distribution of specimens to the appropriate testing area using standard precautions.
  • Reviews incoming orders for appropriateness.
  • Receives and accessions laboratory specimens using electronic systems with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Handles phone calls in a helpful and courteous manner, expeditiously determines need, gives information or forwards caller to appropriate person.
  • Interacts with patients in helpful and courteous manner

Billing Management

  • Evaluates patient billing and identifies preferred payment method and those requirements.
  • Generates accurate billing statements.
  • Applies appropriate fees and charges.

Material Resource Management

  • Establishes inventory control of specimen collection supplies and test materials to rotate and eliminate out-of-date supplies; prepares order lists for Laboratory Manager.
  • Also helps monitor stock of patient care supplies.
  • Maintains stock to promote ease of use and chronological use.
  • Maintains patient specimen collection areas and supplies.

Phlebotomy

  • Uses 2 types patient identifiers to ensure accurate patient identification and sample labeling.
  • Performs venous blood collection using various techniques: syringe, vacutainer, butterfly, capillary collection, blood culture collection.
  • Successfully performs venipuncture without injury, missing only the most difficult patients.
  • Evaluates patient anxiety prior to phlebotomy and offers coping techniques and instruction.
  • Able to identify adverse reactions and accesses assistance appropriately.
