Dining Services focuses on making sure our residents are well served and eating tasty, sustainable and healthy meals. At the same time, our team provides high-end catering options that can service weddings, events and parties. Staff within our dining team also work on nutrition, operations, training, menu planning and so much more. While University Housing employs over 1,000 student staff each year, hundreds of those student staff members work on the dining staff and are a key part of the team.

Job SummaryPerforms cleaning and sanitation duties in University Housing's food service units. All University Housing staff will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment within University Housing.
Duties & Responsibilities

• Operates kitchen dish washer machines as well as hand washes pots, pans, dishes, and silverware; responsible for the storage of cleaned pots and pans.
• Scrapes and cleans tableware.
• Maintains work areas in accordance with federal, state, and regulatory agencies' food safety standards.
• Cleans and polishes silver.
• Maintains equipment and materials needed in the dish room; reports equipment failures to the designated supervisor.
• Deep cleaning including scouring of counters, cabinets, tables, kitchen equipment, and fixtures in a food service unit.
• Disposing of trash and recyclables in the appropriately marked bins and cleans all dining garbage cans.
• Transports dishes, utensils, equipment, supplies to and from proper storage areas; sets up tables, counters, and trays for service; clears tables and transports soiled dishes to kitchen.
• Assists unit managers in the arrangement of dining area/food service equipment.
• Assists in production, transporting and serving of food, as necessary.
• Sweeps and dusts food service unit; washes, mops, and scrubs floors and washes walls (as required) in kitchen and serving areas.
• Responsible for maintaining supplies; including cleaning chemicals for both floor and dish washing.
• Assists in reconciling incoming food orders and deliveries.
• Assists in counting, weighing, and marking prices, and dates merchandise in the Dining-Retail operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Position works in a kitchen area which is heated by ovens and stoves. Moderate lifting, which includes moving boxes, trash and equipment from one location to another, frequently moving about the assigned dining facility throughout the day and remaining in a stationary position for long periods.

The work is performed in an Industrial Kitchen where there is some discomfort in low temperature areas (-10 degrees F) and/or high temperature areas (90 degrees F). There is risk involved when working with dangerous machinery, wet floors, and exposure to steam-operated equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0024 - Food Service Sanitation Laborer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Please note that the anticipated start date for this position is September 2026. Candidates seeking an earlier start date may wish to consider this timeline before applying.

The wage for this position is $19.87. We
strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available
market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications,
collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary
offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.

Work Schedule

The work shift for this position varies. This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy.
