DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Scripps Administration oversees facilities, operations, and administrative support for research and academic programs for all areas of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Areas of support include administrative computing; business and finance; capital planning and space management; communications; contracts and grants; diving program; facilities management; diversity; human resources; operations and safety; and web operations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Uses applicable EH&S concepts to implement a single-function program or multi-specialty programs applicable to a variety of organization infrastructures and departments.

Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and for following the defined policies and procedures. Applies professional level knowledge of subject, including complete knowledge of a specialty area within single academic / occupational discipline.

Decision-making takes into account established procedures, relevant laws, regulations and organization policy, communication / outreach, and impact on other EH&S programs. Through active involvement, support and implement UCSD's sustainability efforts to foster a culture of sustainability among students, faculty and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific, engineering, or Public Health field and two (2) years of professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Solid, comprehensive working knowledge / understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.

  • Knowledge of fundamental chemical and biological research methods, equipment and procedures and protocols.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the hazardous properties of chemicals and biological materials, and the approved procedures for handling and disposal of same, with the ability and willingness to keep knowledge current.

  • Proven experience in dealing with emergency situations.

  • Experience in environmental health and safety principles and practices.

  • Demonstrated experienced in monitoring and documenting safety-training programs.

  • Demonstrated experienced in performing and documenting on-site safety inspections and audits.

  • Prior successful experience developing an Emergency Action Plan and Continuity Plan.

  • Prior experience identifying and assessing vulnerabilities in physical security environments(s).

  • Experience with energy, water and waste conservation. Ability to research and set short and long range plans for campus sustainability and resource conservation.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sustainability theories as well as local and national sustainability initiatives and best practices.

  • Knowledge of environmental management policies, issues, and initiatives. Ability to implement policies and procedures related to the program. Ability to advocate for implementation of new policies and procedures to meet program needs.

  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.

  • Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.

  • Skill to operate standard scientific autoclaves, glassware washer and dryers.

  • Knowledge of applicable local, State, and Federal environmental and safety regulations and policies.

  • Ability to work independently to accomplish assigned goals, exercising good judgment to set priorities, schedule own work time, and meet deadlines.

  • Solid working knowledge and experience using standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe, electronic mail and web-based programs. Experience importing and exporting data from internal and external systems.

  • Ability to collect and collate information to produce accurate and concise reports. Proven analytical skills interpret, synthesize and communicate the information collected effectively.

  • High interpersonal skill to communicate effectively in writing, in person and over the telephone to a diverse audience including: faculty, staff and foreign nationals.

  • Proven written communication skills. Ability to adapt writing style as needed. Ability to write concisely, persuasively and in summary form.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill to work under the pressured conditions of a centralized, to prioritize/organize workload and meet established deadlines.

  • Proven ability to develop new projects within an academic setting; understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts.
