JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is searching for a part-time Senior Acoustics Research Leader to join our Acoustic Signatures Division at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. In this position, you will provide strategic leadership and technical direction for acoustic intelligence research programs, leveraging deep expertise in technical intelligence, resource management, and national security operations.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Lead strategic acoustic intelligence research initiatives across cyber, signals intelligence (SIGINT), and technical intelligence domains

  • Direct research portfolios and manage cross-functional teams of researchers, engineers, and technologists

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Navy, DoD, and Intelligence Community sponsors

  • Provide senior technical oversight for advanced research programs in support of naval and national security missions

  • Integrate cutting-edge technologies in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics into operational intelligence frameworks

Additional responsibilities for higher-level position includes:

  • Write and submit proposals for funded research programs

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors

  • Collaborate with research and academic faculty at Penn State

  • Mentor junior researchers and provide technical leadership across divisions

  • Represent ARL at senior-level government and industry forums

Required Skills/Experience areas include:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in Mathematics, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field

  • Extensive experience (15+ years) in intelligence operations, technical intelligence, or related national security fields

  • Technical and strategic leadership experience

  • Eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

Preferred Skills/Experience areas include:

  • Experience with Navy intelligence operations and naval mission requirements

  • Familiarity with government research programs and the proposal submission process

  • Experience writing white papers and technical publications

Your working location will fully remote, dependent on skillset and location, within the U.S.
