Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Coordinator I (Experiential Biodiversity Learning) for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Reporting to the Chair, the Program Coordinator in Experiential Biodiversity Learning plays a critical, hands-on role in enabling experiential teaching, mentoring, and undergraduate engagement in biodiversity across DEENR.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Maintains and expands the zoological natural history collection (focused on both research and teaching).
  • Mentors students directly in biodiversity collections curation and outreach.
  • Manages specialized experiential teaching spaces.
  • Builds partnerships that create internship pipelines for undergraduate students interested in careers in biodiversity collections and outreach within and outside of Rutgers.
  • Ensures instructors in lab-based courses are safely trained in the use of, and have reliable access to, zoological specimens and equipment.
  • Ensures that DEENR delivers high-quality, hands-on biodiversity learning experiences to the university, especially as part of the Experiential Learning academic goals.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in biodiversity, ecology, evolution, zoology, or a related field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of coordination, organization, facilitation, report analysis, writing, and promotion/outreach using zoological museum specimens.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expertise in zoological taxonomy and biodiversity, including invertebrates and vertebrates.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in zoology (focused on ecology, evolution, or biodiversity or similar).
  • Knowledge of and experience with zoological collection curation and preservation.
  • Experience with data digitization and database management of biodiversity collection data.
  • Experience supervising and training undergraduate interns in a biodiversity collection setting or a similar setting.
  • Experience managing internship programs for undergraduates at a research university.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates in zoology.

Equipment Utilized

  • Advanced computing and database systems.
  • Taxonomic classification systems.
  • Tools and materials used in long-term preservation of biological specimens (dry, taxidermied, frozen, fresh, liquid-preserved).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor and museum environments.
