HJF is seeking an Associate Scientist for execution of projects involving rodent-based viral infection models. Emphasis will be on defining immunological mechanisms of protection, viral evasion of host defenses and on the pre-clinical development of novel vaccines and therapeutic strategies. Responsible for research and development; assisting in the oversight and direction of other scientific and technical staff; drafting of text for manuscripts and grant proposals; formulating and testing novel hypotheses. The successful applicant will have a proven track record of successful experimental design and execution, impactful peer-reviewed publications and supervisory experience.

This position will be in support of the Laboratory of Dr. Brian Schaefer at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike.   • Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocol.
  • Develops necessary new technologies and protocols.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data.
  • May train and supervise technical staff.
  • Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
  • Prepares funding documents, written reports, manuscripts for submission to scientific journals, and patent applications.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Education and Experience

  • PhD in a related scientific discipline
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and significant experience in BSL-2/ABSL-2 protocols;
  • Significant experience with animal models, preferably rodent models, including infections with pathogenic micro-organisms.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques including tissue culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology (e.g., PCR and DNA cloning) and biochemistry.
  • Ability to efficiently troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Experience performing complex multiparameter flow cytometry and analyzing flow cytometry data.
  • Outstanding organizational abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, with significant experience successfully training and managing technical staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with laboratory and University personnel.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $61,000 - $75,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
