The Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is seeking a motivated and eager to learn MDI Intern to join our team! You'll assist Medicolegal Death Investigators in our Investigations section in working to locate pertinent details and medical records relating to the death.

The goal of these investigations is to determine the medical cause and manner of death to help improve public health and safety. We Require

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program or recent graduate from an accredited college or university in a life science, nursing, or criminology field

We Also Value

  • Completion of at least two years of college-level coursework in a life science, nursing, or criminology field

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Experience working or volunteering in a Medical Examiner or Coroner's Office

  • Has or has ability to obtain ABMDI certification

Job Contributions

  • Receives notification of deaths from agencies and outside parties and determines if case is within the Office of the Medical Examiner's jurisdiction.

  • Conducts death investigations to obtain information and evidence to assist Medical Examiners with the determination of the cause and manner of death; directs the recovery, transportation, and processing of bodies and related evidence.

  • Investigates the physical and medical aspects of natural death by telephone when appropriate.

  • Conducts interviews eliciting pertinent past and present history from persons associated with the decedent.

  • Obtains and reviews medical histories and records from private physicians or health care agencies.

  • Obtain fingerprints and collect specimens from decedents after transportation to the OME.

  • Prepares written reports of the investigation.

  • Records comments in the DAVE (Database Application for Vital Events) System for death certificates under review.

  • Collaborates with law enforcement personnel, funeral homes, and other agencies to expedite disposition of the case.

  • Coordinates with organ donor agencies to facilitate requests for organ and tissue donations.

  • Attends various training programs to maintain high standards and implement new methods of investigations.

  • May be required to give sworn testimony in a deposition or before a court or other legal tribunal.

  • May be required to travel to local hospitals for specimen retrieval requiring further testing.

  • May be required to complete gross examination of decedents to assess for trauma.

Working Conditions

  • Sufficient strength and physical and emotional stability to work under adverse conditions. Ability to work in malodorous conditions closely with decedents in various stages of decomposition. Hours are full-time and include some holidays, nights and weekends. Shift work may be required.
