The Martin Lab in the Department of Biology at the University of Iowa is seeking a full time Associate Research Scientist to conduct research in neurobiology, with a focus on understanding the molecules and mechanisms that coordinate electrical and chemical synapse formation. Neurodevelopmental disorders likely arise through differences in synapse formation and function, yet while chemical synapses are well-studied, electrical synapses are far less understood. Further, while the structures that make up these different synapse types are distinct, we find that, surprisingly, molecules exist to bridge their formation and seek to understand how a neuron molecularly specifies the correct type of synapse to build and support. Our work defines a new frontier by investigating synapse coordination: the mechanisms that direct the assembly of electrical and chemical synapses, how these processes overlap and compete, the importance of this coordination to long-term nervous system function/behavior, and how disruptions to coordination can reveal a new understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. This position is ideal for individuals seeking intensive, mentored research training in preparation for graduate school or a career in biology or molecular and cellular neuroscience. The intern will gain hands-on experience across neurodevelopmental molecular, behavioral, and quantitative analysis methods in a highly collaborative and supportive environment. This position is ideal of individuals planning to apply to graduate school in biology, neuroscience, or related fields. This is a paid one-year position with the possibility of renewal depending on performance and available funding. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in biology, neuroscience, clinical science, or related discipline, substantial research or work experience with zebrafish as a model organism including zebrafish neuron culture and immunostaining. Experience with confocal analysis is desirable but not required. Responsibilities include analyzing data and assisting with preparation of publications, implementing molecular and behavioral data collection, attending lab meetings, area seminars as relevant (e.g., Biology and Neuroscience), departmental lectures and colloquia, and presenting at conferences, and maintaining research projects (e.g., lab coordination, zebrafish husbandry, etc).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with day-to-day operations in the laboratory, stocking of essential items, and maintaining equipment.
- Help maintain essential zebrafish lines and conduct zebrafish husbandry tasks
- Contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, grant applications, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.
- Supervise and train new lab members in experimental techniques.
- Contribute to mentoring trainees in the lab.
- Support lab management and contribute to a collaborative research environment.
- Participate in lab meetings and contribute to science communication efforts (e.g., conference posters, manuscripts).
SALARY AND BENEFITS
- Starting salary of $ 39,530 (Year 1), per the University of Iowa FY26 2A pay level.
- Optional health insurance (UIGRADCare or SHIP) and student dental plan
- Mandatory retirement plan participation
- University Workers' Compensation coverage
- Fifteen days paid annual leave plus paid University holidays
- Opportunities for co-authorships on publications and conference presentations.
