Dean, we are committed to building the next generation of technical leaders in electrical, engineering, and cybersecurity industries.
The Design Engineering Leader 1 leads the engineering design function for complex design-build projects and programs while building client trust and validating world-class technical solutions. This role provides discipline leadership, technical oversight, and professional design judgment from concept through sealed or issued-for-construction release. The role is accountable for engineering best practices, technical risk management, interdisciplinary coordination, and the development of engineers who produce safe, code-compliant, constructible, and maintainable designs.
When professional licensure is required, this role either serves as the responsible licensed engineer for assigned work or leads the work under the authority of the designated Engineer of Record. The role protects the integrity of stamped/sealed documents and ensures that subsequent design changes are controlled, reviewed, and approved through the appropriate professional engineering process.
Responsibilities
The Design Engineering Leader 1 is responsible for:
Validating world-class technical solutions that meet contract requirements, owner criteria, applicable codes, industry standards, safety requirements, and authority-having-jurisdiction expectations.
Owning or directing the basis of design, design criteria, calculations, drawings, specifications, narratives, and other artifacts required for sealed or issued-for-construction deliverables.
Managing technical design risk, including assumptions, code interpretations, deviations, interfaces, interdisciplinary gaps, delegated design packages, supplier engineering, and specialty engineering scopes.
Providing oversight, direction, and technical expertise to engineering teams during concept design, detailed design, interdisciplinary coordination, review, and final release.
Establishing and enforcing engineering quality processes, including design checks, interdisciplinary reviews, independent calculations, comment resolution, document control, and stamp/seal readiness reviews.
Leading client, consultant, AHJ, and internal technical reviews; presenting design intent clearly; and resolving technical comments in a timely and professional manner.
Partnering with estimating, preconstruction, procurement, fabrication, commissioning, and execution teams to ensure the design is constructible, cost-aware, maintainable, and aligned with project strategy.
Preparing client-specific design solutions, technical narratives, qualifications, alternates, and value engineering options without compromising code compliance or professional obligations.
Driving development and maintenance of design standards, calculation templates, specifications, discipline playbooks, lessons learned, and reusable design artifacts.
Reviewing technical project details with project leadership to communicate design status, technical decisions, risks, required approvals, and impacts to cost or schedule.
Managing the integration of engineering data from multiple company systems and analyzing the data to identify quality trends, design risks, coordination issues, and improvement opportunities.
Leading, coaching, and mentoring engineers, designers, and technical experts in engineering judgment, design rigor, code application, professional responsibility, and client communication.
Supporting project execution after design release by evaluating RFIs, field conditions, substitutions, and changes that affect the sealed design, and by routing modifications through formal engineering change control.
The Design Engineering Leader 1 required skills are:
Strong knowledge of engineering principles, applicable codes, standards, design methods, and application requirements for one or more engineering disciplines.
Ability to lead the application of principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment for one or more specific branches of engineering to the design and production of construction deliverables.
Strong understanding of professional engineering responsibilities, including responsible charge, engineering ethics, document control, and stamp/seal governance.
Experience leading technical quality control, design checking, interdisciplinary coordination, and formal comment-resolution processes.
Ability to lead and participate in technical discussions with clients, authorities having jurisdiction, project leadership, execution teams, and discipline experts.
Strong ability to manage technical design risk, communicate assumptions, and identify design decisions that affect cost, schedule, safety, quality, or long-term maintainability.
Ability to calculate, evaluate, and present project costs or cost impacts when budgeting, evaluating alternates, or supporting preconstruction.
Ability to develop and maintain trust and trusting relationships with clients, project leaders, execution teams, and engineering staff.
The Design Engineering Leader 1 preferred skills are:
Ability to review and correct construction drawings, specifications, calculations, design narratives, and construction project standards.
Strong knowledge of fabrication and installation standards and specifications, including how design decisions influence prefabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning.
Experience with BIM/VDC-enabled design coordination, model-based reviews, clash resolution, and design-to-fabrication workflows.
Experience with client standards, federal or mission-critical design requirements, cybersecurity/technology infrastructure design, commissioning requirements, or other specialized technical domains relevant to the business.
Ability to develop new products, technologies, services, design standards, or repeatable engineered solutions that improve quality, speed, safety, or project outcomes.
The Design Engineering Leader 1 must have experience with:
All company applications required for engineering, timekeeping, estimating, project controls, forms, and document control, including Job Connect, EVMS, Timesheets, Accubid, Infralink, and Forms where applicable.
