Job Description:
Production Operator
Huntsman is seeking a Production Operator supporting the Performance Products Division located in HATC. This position will report to the BSO Technology Manager.
Job Scope
The Production Operator role is to safely and accurately operate and adapt equipment and conditions to meet researchers' needs to develop new products and capabilities for Huntsman while handling hazardous (toxic, caustic, acidic, and flammable) chemicals. This role is also responsible for safety oversight in the operations area to ensure the safety of all individuals in the facility.
In summary, as the Operation Specialist BSO, you will:
- Accurately and timely (with an emphasis on attention to detail and accuracy of execution) set up, operate, and monitor bench scale units (distillation, batch and continuous reactors). Perform basic laboratory analysis of product, including the use of hazardous chemicals. Draw product samples for laboratory analysis and, based on laboratory analysis and customer response, make necessary changes in operating conditions. Perform tasks involving material handling of hazardous chemicals and high-pressure equipment. Perform maintenance tasks on equipment in conformance with specified requirements.
- Adhere to safety requirements and instructions appropriate to the work performed and to general safety instructions applicable to all areas to ensure the safety of all individuals in the facility. Maintain proficient knowledge of proper safety procedures and processes for handling hazardous (toxic, caustic, acidic, and flammable) chemicals.
- Regularly and safely conduct routine equipment modifications such as catalyst changes, feed/product tank changes, filter changes, and glassware setup.
- Accurately execute required work to operate, control, adjust, and regulate temperatures, pressures, levels, flow rates, and other operating variables at conditions requested by customers for production of quality and on-specification products. As necessary, operate the unit via the PLC system.
- Maintain good housekeeping habits to ensure cleanliness, neatness, and order of the work area and equipment in accordance with company requirements.
- Accurately maintain electronic lab notebook records, shift turnover log books, and data such as operating data, work orders, and safe work permits using prescribed forms.
- May direct the work and train others assigned to the job; cooperate and assist others in the performance of assigned duties.
Qualifications
You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required for all jobs. One year of relevant experience may typically be substituted for one year of formal education.
- Associate's Degree in Chemical Technology, applied chemistry, or a related field (relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an Associate Degree).
- 2+ years of related experience.
Skills and knowledge
- Ability to recognize and assess unusual situations and take immediate and appropriate corrective action to avoid potentially catastrophic and dangerous situations.
- Ability to attentively and accurately perform multiple coordinated processes and related activities.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs of bagged/drummed materials several times a week.
- Proficiency with Internet, email, and Microsoft programs.
- Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and walk over uneven surfaces.
- Knowledge of proper use of personal protective safety equipment.
- Ability to be certified to wear a respirator.
- Ability to work with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- Proficient organizational skills for maintaining a database of equipment, spare parts, and unit documentation.
- Communicates tactfully and effectively both verbally and in writing, and maintains effective work relations with those encountered during the course of employment.
- Flexibility and adaptability to new instructions and/or dynamic organizational priorities is critical for job success.
Working Environment
- Handling hazardous chemicals (toxic, caustic, acidic, and flammable).
- Work involving high-pressure equipment and bench scale units.
- Rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, with weekend/holiday/overtime requirements as needed.
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing stairs/ladders, and walking on uneven surfaces.
- PPE required; must be able to obtain respirator certification.
