The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology and surgical pathology.

Under the direct supervision of The Dermatopathology and Oral Pathology Service Histology Supervisor, the incumbent provides technical and clerical support to the histology laboratory.

The incumbent is familiar with a lab department's administrative processes including receiving specimens for accessioning and how to navigate data information system to retrieve patient demographics, clinical and gross descriptions. Mainly, they complete laboratory administrative duties including but not limited to print and organize slides and slide labels, QC slide send-outs, file slides, blocks and department paperwork. They are comfortable with general laboratory PPE procedures and performing routine laboratory maintenance. As needed, the incumbent can handle and safely dispose of chemical, biological and occasionally sharps waste and can maintain general histology equipment (cassette printer, tissue processor, embedding unit, H/E stainer, etc). They also maintain the readiness and order of specified work areas and performs other projects as directed by the histology supervisor, pathologists', and department manager.

Administrative and Production Duties

  1. Prints daily reports and reconciles them with information in data system, paying special attention to clinical and grossing documents and logs.
  2. Creates daily summaries and lists of special orders (i.e. list cases with special stains, IHC stains, special embedding and microtomy protocol cases, etc.)
  3. Examines grossers notes and diagrams to extract slide and label information.
  4. Inputs data into slide etcher to produce slides and pathology database to produce labels. Inspects all slides and labels for print quality.
  5. Organize material based on workflow and priority for histotechnicians.

Laboratory Quality Control

  1. Performs QC on slides produced to ensure sections are full representations of tissue in block, that the block and slide are correctly matched and labeled.
  2. Sets-up slide flats in order and preference as dictated by SOP (i.e. organized in cases in numerical order and sorts them by priority, prefix category, location of referring physician, etc.)
  3. Identifies and organizes requisitions for high priority cases so that they can be easily paired with slides.
  4. Updates all required department records, logs and quality management forms.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from college with a major in an applicable natural science; or two years of college courses (including courses in natural sciences) plus 4 or more years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years in a high production laboratory setting.
  • Excellent problem solving, interpersonal and situational awareness skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks effectively and complete tasks in a timely manner with minimum supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors, or associates degree preferred with 2 years of experience in pathology or a related medical field.
  • Must be able to set priorities according to situation and perform all work with thoroughness, efficiency and with a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite and possess the ability to adapt to new computer and information systems within a timely manner.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all applicable infection control, health and safety policies, and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit.
  • Maintains timely and constructive communications with the supervisor and other affected persons regarding problems related to the work area.
  • Adheres to all other institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of dermatopathology and oral pathology material handling is greatly preferred.
