The University of Iowa

The Department of Cinematic Arts at the University of Iowa invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Film Studies for the 2026-2027 academic year. We are seeking a skilled instructor to teach a combination of introductory and advanced courses in Film Studies, including film history to 1960s, a survey of film theory, a genres course, and several advanced topics courses.

The teaching load for this position is 4 courses per semester, with the possibility of doubling up course in some cases (i.e. two sections of the same course) to reduce preps. While the advanced course topics are open, we are hoping this hire will add to our curricular offerings, especially in areas related to Global Cinema, Film Theory, Film History; Race, Gender, and Sexuality; New Media; or Animation.

The start date of this position is August 19, 2026. Appointments are for one academic year and may be renewable up to a maximum of three years total, depending on Department teaching need and College approval.

The Department of Cinematic Arts offers BA degrees in Cinema and Screenwriting currently serving over 500 majors and minors, as well as serving hundreds of non-majors through General Education courses. We also have graduate programs in Film & Video Production (MFA) and Film Studies (MA and PhD).
