Currently recruiting a Dental Assistant to provide dental support services at Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego, California. The Dental Assistant will provide services Monday through Friday, normally between 6: 30 a.M. And 3: 00 p.M., with 8-hour shifts and a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. This is a meaningful opportunity to support dental care for active duty service members, their families, and other eligible beneficiaries in a military medical setting.
DUTIES OF THE DENTAL ASSISTANT:
- Provide administrative and clinical support to ensure efficient dental clinic and dental laboratory operations.
- Support case intake, documentation, data management, and coordination of dental laboratory case progress.
- Coordinate cases being outsourced to military and civilian dental laboratories.
- Serve as a customer service point of contact for communication with dentists regarding case progress, updates, and due dates.
- Organize data related to dental laboratory case completion, including anticipated lead times.
- Assist in one or more phases of complex or difficult restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgical, endodontic, or periodontal treatment.
- Receive and schedule patients for dental treatment.
- Obtain and record related patient medical history.
- Chart examination and treatment information.
- Record information on prescriptions.
- Sterilize instruments, materials, and equipment.
- Prepare surgical trays.
- Maintain dental equipment in a clean and operative condition.
- Assist dentists chairside during dental procedures.
- Perform intra-oral procedures as directed by the dentist.
- Take preliminary impressions for study models.
- Remove sutures.
- Place and remove rubber dams, perio-packs, matrix bands, and wedges.
- Relay dentist instructions to patients regarding post-treatment care.
- Instruct patients in proper dental techniques, care of appliances, and causes of dental decay.
- Operate dental X-ray equipment to take intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs.
- Maintain, clean, and perform minor repairs on X-ray equipment and materials.
- Pour and trim models from impressions.
- Construct custom impression trays.
- Maintain recurring reports related to dental activities.
- Comply with infection control, safety, documentation, and patient privacy requirements applicable to the military treatment facility.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE DENTAL ASSISTANT:
- Must satisfy at least one (1) of the following education, certification, or experience pathways:
- Certificate or Associate Degree as a dental assistant or dental technician from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and 12 months of experience within the preceding 24 months.
- Certification from a military dental technician or dental assistant school and 12 months of experience within the preceding 24 months.
- Certification from a Red Cross Dental Assistant course and 12 months of experience within the preceding 24 months.
- 36 months of experience within the preceding 48 months as a dental assistant in a private practice or military clinic.
- Membership in good standing with the American Association of Dental Assistants, with required continuing education, and 12 months of experience within the preceding 24 months.
- Training must have included coursework in radiation physics;radiation biology;radiation health, safety, and protection;X-ray films and radiographic film quality;radiographic techniques;darkroom and processing techniques;film mounting;and digital radiographic processing techniques.
- Training in CAD/CAM technology, ceramics, or orthodontics is required for applicable specialization.
- Must be certified in radiography as required by 42 CFR Part 75.
- Must be able to complete required health, immunization, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B screening requirements before providing services.
- Must be able to complete required background/security processes for access to a Navy and Defense Health Agency medical facility.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and comply with all applicable facility policies, procedures, training, safety, infection control, and documentation requirements.
