Job Summary
Under direction of the Chief Administrative Officer serve as Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer for the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and the Department of Physics. Monitor department activities for compliance with health and safety regulations and requirements, and implement campus safety programs. Oversee facilities and manage renovation projects. Assume on-site command of emergency situations and direct response. Function as primary after hours emergency contact and departmental liaison with Police, Fire, EH&S and county and state agencies. Represent the department in building safety and security issues, fire and police issues, EH&S matters, ADA accommodations and other campus planning groups and committees. - Experience in long range planning, management and administration of space, health and safety, and instructional and research support.
- Experience with health and safety regulations, handling, housing of laboratory chemicals, reagents, and supplies, and maintaining clear, accurate, and organized records.
- Knowledge/understanding of related laws and regulations governing research and teaching laboratories that occurs in a physical science academic department.
- Organizational and time management skills to plan, coordinate, and implement safety programs; and to prioritize multiple projects and workload and meet deadlines.
- Skills using the appropriate technology and relevant scientific equipment.
- Computer skills with word processing, spreadsheet and database to create forms, draft correspondence, use email and the internet.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a physical science or equivalent combination of education and work experience in a related field.
- Experience educating others on safety issues as they pertain to hazardous materials and waste, emergency action plans, and injury and illness programs.
- Experience resolving safety-related problems and achieving regulatory compliance. Experience with CUPA safety management programs.
- Experience coordinating and conducting audits, investigations and evaluations to achieve necessary corrective action in a timely manner.
