Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate in the Human Microbiome Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine ( CABM), located on the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences ( RBHS) campus in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Human Microbiome Laboratory seeks to understand the role of the microbiome in human health, with a focus on early-life effects and mechanisms underlying disease development.
The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Associate is to conduct research on microbiome characteristics in humans and animal models. The project will involve experimental procedures to permit biochemical examinations of specimens and tissues, performed by the Postdoctoral Associate or by others in the research group, or by collaborators in other groups. The project may also involve the use and development of software programs for analysis of multi-dimensional metagenomic, transcriptomic, and metatranscriptomic data. The Postdoctoral Associate will participate in the configuration and maintenance of databases necessary for conduct of the project. It is expected that research will lead to publications. The Postdoctoral Associate will be expected to prepare manuscripts as well as contribute to the preparation of grant and fellowship applications. The Postdoctoral Associate will also be expected to present research findings and guide the research project of undergraduate research assistants.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Conduct longitudinal experiments in laboratory animals, involving multiple experimental groups, including specimen collection during life or sacrifice, and the transfer of biological materials to other animals, in support of microbiome research.
  • Conduct biochemical procedures for extraction of proteins, hormones, nucleic acids from bio-specimens, and preparation of libraries for high-throughput sequencing.
  • Carry out informatic analyses of metagenomic, transcriptomic, and metatranscriptomic data, with the goal of defining populations, individual taxa, genes, pathways and transcripts in body secretions and excreta, as well as host transcriptional responses.
  • Participate in the configuration and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment, including computers, necessary for conduct of the project.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts for publication, and contribute to the preparation of research grant and fellowship applications.
  • Present research findings at laboratory and department meetings, as well as at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate effectively with other members of the laboratory, including guiding the research projects of undergraduate research assistants as appropriate.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Microbial Biology or a related science is required.
  • Ph.D. candidates in All-But-Degree (ABD) status will also be considered.
  • Prior productivity in microbiome research and computational analysis must be demonstrated.
  • Experience is required with standard microbiome molecular biology techniques, mouse handling and tissue collection, nucleic acid purification, and biochemical analyses.

  • The candidate is expected to be proficient in spoken and written English.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A background in human microbiome research, with a focus on early-life effects and mechanisms underlying disease development is preferred.
  • Previous experience with microbiome metagenome and network analyses, DNA quantitation, and computational analyses and working with experimental animal samples is also preferred.

Standing, sitting, walking, talking, seeing, and hearing. Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for standard laboratory operations including pipetting and use of microscopes.
