Summer Undergraduate Assistant

This position offers a temporary research appointment for Summer 2026 at The Hormel Institute. The student will receive research training and mentorship, enabling them to apply knowledge acquired through coursework to active research projects. The experience is structured to provide exposure to biomedical research methodologies, promote professional development, and foster an appreciation for scientific careers. The employer retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Focus of Job Responsibilities

Conduct lab research. - 75%

* Perform molecular biology and biochemistry, genomics experiments independently.
* Assist other lab members to perform molecular and cellular assays.
* Participate in lab meetings.
* Produce weekly report of research progress to lab director/supervisor(s).

Record keeping - 10%

* Keep complete and updated cell line, DNA and chemical stocks and lab notes.

Lab maintenance - 10%

* Maintain supplier and reagent orders.
* Clean and sterilize lab glassware and plastics.
* Sterilize and properly dispose of discarded research materials.
* Help maintain a clean and functional laboratory.

Other duties as assigned. - 5%

Flexible Work Profile One, Office/Lab-Based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office/lab. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely. Your office will be located at The Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota. The Hormel Institute management retains the right to modify flexible work arrangement agreements on a temporary or permanent basis for any reason at any time.

Required Qualifications

* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program.
* Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction in English.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

* Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Pay Range: $16.00 per hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
