THE POSITION

As a Domestic Animal Health Inspector with the Department of Agriculture, you will play a key part in keeping animals healthy and protecting the state's food systems. You will travel throughout the region, meet with agricultural partners, and help ensure safe and responsible animal care. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position helps protect Pennsylvania agriculture by inspecting regulated facilities, supporting disease prevention efforts, and ensuring compliance with animal health laws. As a Domestic Animal Health Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

  • Facility Inspections: Conduct inspections of regulated animal operations and document conditions and compliance
  • Disease Investigation: Investigate potential disease cases, collect samples, and support epidemiological reviews
  • Quarantine Enforcement: Impose, monitor, and enforce quarantines to protect animal and public health
  • Community Outreach: Provide education to farmers, veterinarians, and the public about disease prevention and program requirements
  • Emergency Response: Assist in animal health emergencies, including response operations and required documentation
  • Record Management: Prepare reports, submit required forms, and maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Limited term, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is home headquartered for Adams, Berks, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Schuylkill, Snyder, Union, and York County. In order to be home headquartered, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
    • If the selected candidate does not reside in one of the home headquartered counties, the Commonwealth vehicle will be stored at a location in one of the counties listed above. The reporting location will be determined during the hiring process.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Graduation from an approved Veterinary Medical Technology Training program and two (2) years of experience in the raising or handling of animals used for a variety of commercial purposes including food animals and farm animals; or
  • A bachelor's degree in Biology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Poultry Science, or a closely related area with at least 16 credits in animal science; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid class C driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • This position requires current certification as a Poultry Technician or the ability to gain certification during the probationary period.
