Overview

The Data Steward ensures that data within their business domain is clearly defined, trusted, properly governed, and suitable for both business and regulatory needs. The Data Steward collaborates closely with business stakeholders, IT professionals, and the Data Governance Office to align data management practices with organizational objectives. The Data Steward is responsible for promoting a data-driven culture by ensuring the quality, integrity, and reliability of data assets within their business domain. All responsibilities must be performed in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Note: (For NJ candidates) This role will be located at our future headquarters in Short Hills, N.J. Until the new headquarters is operational, the successful candidate will be offered the ability to work in our Branchville, N.J. location during this interim period.


Responsibilities

  • Implements data governance policies and standards within their business domain, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements as necessary.
  • Defines data quality expectations and rules, performs data quality monitoring, root cause analysis, partners with IT to resolve issues and develop scorecards.
  • Builds, manages and curates a data catalog of the enterprise's data to enable stakeholders to discover data assets. Document and maintain metadata for data including ownership, definitions, taxonomies, standards, and reference data through proactive discovery, recurring SME engagement, and evaluation of current and future initiatives and capabilities.
  • Consults on projects, enhancements and other changes to the data and provides input from a Data Governance perspective.
  • Defines, creates, validates, and maintains metadata for data assets within their domain, including managing Key Data Elements (KDEs).
  • Develop and deliver training and data literacy programs for stakeholders to increase understanding of data management processes and drive adoption throughout their business domain and the organization.
  • Evangelize Data Governance within the assigned business domain to contribute to the collective vision to elevate the organizations' commitment to clean, reliable, and accurate business data.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Requirements

* Knowledgeable on Data Governance best practices, processes, and techniques
* Strong analytical, data management and problem solving skills.
* Motivated self-starter, driven for results, effective at prioritizing and multitasking and working independently as well as in a team environment
* Awareness of the security, privacy, and quality requirements for critical data.
* Experience analyzing data and identifying data issues or inconsistencies, able to perform root cause analysis.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand business and technical functions, processes and information quickly
* Ability to communicate technical concepts to business stakeholders.
* Ability to quickly pick up knowledge on Data Governance tools.
* Exercise independent judgment and attempts to address issues prior to seeking guidance from senior staff members.
* Able to communicate effectively and concisely with individuals at all levels of the organization.
* Ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams and business units.

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in MIS, Business Management, Information Technology or equivalent field
* 4+ years' work experience with data management, data analytics, data engineering, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in data governance initiatives.
* Knowledge of Data Governance, data management and data quality processes across the data lifecycle, from data capture through data retirement.
* Experience working with Data Governance and Data Quality platforms.
* Insurance industry experience preferred.
* Data modeling experience is beneficial.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
