THE POSITION

The High School Automotive Mechanic Intern position with the Department of Transportation gives you the chance to learn real mechanical skills in a hands-on shop environment. You will work alongside experienced technicians who will guide you through important tasks. This role helps you build confidence while supporting the work that keeps vehicles and equipment running safely. It is a great way to explore a future career in the automotive field.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports shop operations by assisting skilled technicians with repairs, maintenance, and diagnostic work. As a High School Automotive Mechanic Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Technical Assistance: Observe technicians and help with repairs to engines, systems, and equipment
  • Diagnostic Support: Assist with preventive maintenance and basic diagnostic tasks using provided tools
  • Shop Operations: Take initiative to keep work areas organized and contribute to efficient daily workflow
  • Documentation Tasks: Record work completed, time spent, and parts used on assigned forms
  • Safety Awareness: Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and report injuries or hazards
  • Team Communication: Work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, and storeroom staff to complete tasks
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Work schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location
  • High School Internship for the 2026-2027 School Year - Beginning 07/01/26 - 06/30/27.
    • If the student is beginning junior year, the option is available to remain in the program through senior year.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age by the internship start date.
  • You must be a junior or senior status for the upcoming 2025 - 2026 high school year

Additional Requirements:
  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the school upon offer and acceptance of this position.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • Must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved vocational program that has provided preparation and training for the duties of this internship.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
