ABOUT THE SCHOOL:

Located in the heart of Oakland, Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is a one-of-a-kind educational experience committed to empowering our students to realize their full potential. The School also provides vital early intervention and outreach services to visually impaired students, with or without additional challenges, throughout western Pennsylvania. Founded in 1887, our School is best equipped to care for and educate students with visual impairments. As a private institution chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the School educates approximately 200 enrolled students from 80-85 school districts within western Pennsylvania.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The A Child's VIEW Director provides high-quality childcare for children of Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children staff within a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. This role is responsible for supporting children's development through play-based learning, structured routines, and responsive caregiving. The Director will implement developmentally appropriate practices while ensuring full compliance with all NAEYC, Keystone STARS, and DHS regulations. This position requires a collaborative, flexible professional who is committed to maintaining a high standard of care and supporting a positive, inclusive community for children and families.

POSITION INFORMATION:

FLSA Status: Exempt

Schedule: 210 days per year; Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Salary: $45,000 - $55,000 per year

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Program Leadership

    • Lead and manage all aspects of the onsite childcare program.
    • Maintain high program quality aligned with NAEYC and Keystone STARS Level 4 standards.
    • Oversee curriculum implementation and developmentally appropriate practices.
    • Implement Creative Curriculum to support developmentally appropriate learning experiences and ongoing child assessment


  • Program Collaboration

    • Work closely with Primary Program leadership to ensure alignment with WPSBC's educational mission. Including blending the students within the ACV program with the Primary Program of the Main School population.
    • Support appropriate collaboration and shared learning opportunities between programs.


  • Accreditation and Compliance

    • Maintain NAEYC accreditation and Keystone STARS Level 4 designation.
    • Ensure compliance with Pennsylvania DHS childcare licensing regulations and applicable Allegheny County Health Department guidelines.
    • Coordinate inspections, maintain required documentation, and lead quality improvement efforts.
    • Work with the Early Learning Resource Center and Child Care Works to maintain accurate records for children eligible for subsidized tuition.


  • Staff Supervision

    • Recruit, supervise, and support childcare staff.
    • Provide coaching, professional development, and performance evaluations.
    • Maintain appropriate staffing ratios and foster a collaborative staff culture.


  • Family Engagement

    • Serve as the primary contact for enrolled employee families.
    • Maintain clear and consistent communication regarding program activities and children's development.
    • Address family questions or concerns professionally and promptly.


  • Operations and Administration

    • Oversee daily operations including enrollment, staffing coverage, and classroom materials.
    • Maintain accurate attendance, enrollment, and regulatory records.
    • Collaborate with WPSBC leadership on program capacity, staffing, and operational needs.


  • Health and Safety

    • Maintain a safe, clean, and developmentally appropriate environment.
    • Ensure adherence to DHS and Allegheny County health and safety procedures.
    • Oversee medication administration, emergency preparedness planning, and incident documentation.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Education, or related field preferred.


  • Experience

    • Previous experience as a Childcare Center Director required.
    • Minimum five years of experience in early childhood education.
    • Experience supervising staff and managing program operations.
    • Experience with NAEYC accreditation and/or Keystone STARS programs preferred.


  • Knowledge and Skills

    • Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices.
    • Familiarity with Pennsylvania childcare licensing regulations.
    • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary school environment.


  • Clearances and Certifications

    • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
    • Pennsylvania State Police Clearance
    • FBI Fingerprint Clearance
    • Mandated Reporter Training
    • Pediatric First Aid and CPR Certification




Physical Demands / Work Requirements:

The following physical demands are typical for a role in this setting:



  • Ability to help lift and/or position students when necessary. Must be comfortable with lifting up to 50 pounds from the floor.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects such as equipment, books, stacks of reports, etc, generally items weighing 20 pounds or less.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, twisting, crouching, stooping, kneeling, crawling, sitting, and walking including up and down stairs.
  • Pushing wheelchairs, moving/sliding student equipment.
  • Ability to work in a hot humid environment in therapy pool area and outdoors during student activities and morning and afternoon transportation as needed.
  • Communicate respectfully with multiple team members.
  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of educational areas and therapy areas (i.e. OT/PT gym, clinic room, storage rooms).
  • Assist with student enrichment groups and adapted sports programming as assigned.
  • Ability to read and attend to computer screens.
  • Manual dexterity skills for typing and use of various equipment.
  • Comply with established policies and other duties.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
