Fabrication Quality Engineer

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fabrication Quality Engineer to work on our Environment, Safety, Health & Quality (ESH&Q) team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) facility with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Technical Expertise & Quality Oversight

  • Serve as a fabrication quality subject matter expert; contribute to setting quality standards and actively drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in design reviews and work planning to ensure quality requirements are integrated into fabrication processes from the outset.
  • Develop tailored inspection plans and define nonconformance criteria specific to fabrication workflows, including dimensional, load, and pressure testing.
  • Apply and interpret ASME Section III (NB, NC, ND), B31.1, B31.3, ASME Y14.5, welding symbols, design drawings, and acceptance criteria.
  • Apply NDE/NDT methods (VT, PT, RT, UT, LT) and inspection techniques (precision dimensional, XRF, hydrostatic/pneumatic testing) to validate fabrication quality.
  • Establish and maintain the inspection basis for quality-significant items and services in compliance with fabrication and procurement specifications.

Audits, Surveillance & Vendor Oversight

  • Conduct internal quality program audits, reviews, and surveillances to verify that quality requirements are identified, incorporated, and implemented.
  • Evaluate vendors and suppliers using sound auditing methods to confirm capability against applicable standards (e.g., NQA-1, INL requirements).
  • Review and provide concurrence on quality-affecting documentation.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Interface
    Act as a point of contact for customers on fabrication quality issues and managing non-conformance reports (NCRs) through resolution.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to program, project, and facility management on quality compliance matters; escalate and coordinate significant issues across organizational lines.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to ensure quality needs are understood and met.

Mentorship & People Development

  • Informally mentor and support the growth of fabrication quality engineers, quality inspectors, and NDE personnel through knowledge sharing and hands-on guidance.
  • Coach facility and project personnel on fabrication-specific processes, tools, and quality methodologies to foster a quality culture and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to team development by sharing expertise, modeling quality standards, and supporting colleagues in navigating complex quality challenges.

Workload Management

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain required training and qualifications per individual training plan.
  • Perform others duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or a technical field such as Chemistry, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Management, or a closely related degree and (5) years of related experience or Masters Degree and (2) years of related experience or in lieu of degree 11 years of related experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or a technical field such as Chemistry, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Management, or a closely related degree and (9) years of related experience or Masters Degree and (6) years of related experience or in lieu of degree (15) years of related experience.
  • Required to obtain and maintain an L security clearance.
  • Qualify for and maintain INL Quality Engineer Qualification
  • Obtain and maintain Radworker I qualification.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Experience:

  • A degree in welding, manufacturing, engineering, or quality-focused technical field.
  • Lead Auditor Qualification (or ability to obtain).
  • ASME Y14.5 GD&T Training and Certifications
  • NDE/NDT certification(s) (ASNT or equivalent)
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry Codes and standards, including:
    • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes
    • ASME Piping Codes
    • ASME NQA-1
    • ASME Y14.5
    • AWS

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use stairs, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($79,344 - $162,732 ) / Level ($95,256 - $195,288). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
