Overview

General Dynamics Electric Boat Department 425, Electrical Systems Embedded Software Engineering, is seeking an accomplished data science professional.

Who we're looking for:

We need someone who is self-motivated and can work independently, but also someone with strong leadership potential to be able to grow the scope of the role over time. If you are deeply analytical with a passion for data and details, then this role may be for you. To be successful in this role, the following must describe you well.

You are a problem solver and have extensive experience in resolving complex challenges. You are comfortable and proficient communicating with technical and non-technical peers. You enjoy rolling up your sleeves, diving into data, tackling difficult technical tasks, and coding solutions and tools. When you think about data and its usage, you constantly think about the "why" and "what if". Finding patterns in data is a passion of yours. You're a professional who acts with a sense of urgency but has a track record of doing things well and following processes and procedures. You are highly proficient in verbal communications and have extensive technical writing expertise. You are someone who takes our Electric Boat values to heart and demonstrates them every day:

    Value each other
  • Behave with integrity and purpose
  • Commit to excellence

What you'll be doing:

You will bridge the gap between data analysis and real-world defense applications for innovative AI/ML solutions. You'll help lead our efforts in applying new technologies in support of designing and building US Navy Nuclear Submarines. You will use your skills with data integration, data visualization, big data and programming to do the following:

  • Wrangling, preprocessing and manipulating data for use in ML algorithms
  • Designing, developing, testing, deploying and tuning AI models
  • Designing, writing and reviewing code that consumes, analyzes, and manipulates large data sets
  • Developing proficiency with deep learning algorithms, design considerations and methods to overcome limitations and constraints due to hardware or data
  • Helping to establish a new, core data science team
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand domain-specific data and requirements across a variety of domains
  • Quantifying and explaining data quality, and performing statistical analysis to describe data and usage
  • Discovering and articulating use cases for tools and data that account for data limitations
  • Contributing to the direction, progress and completion of ML projects
  • Creating and refining processes and procedures to manage, verify, consume, and distribute data
  • Assisting in creation of technical proposals, whitepapers, and customer presentations
  • Helping to ensure compliance with data security, AI governance and ethical guidelines

Electric Boat offers Flexible Work Arrangements that allows for some work to be performed remotely and at home. This is limited in this position due to the environment required for most software development. Please ask for details to understand the extent to which it can be supported

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or engineering
  • Minimally five years of post-graduate engineering experience
  • Minimally five years of experience developing and deploying AI models using relevant frameworks and libraries (PyTorch, scikit-learn)
  • Minimally five years of experience with Linux command line (bash and shell scripting)
  • Minimally five years of experience working with large, complex datasets
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance through the Department of Defense

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in writing, testing and debugging code in Python and using tools like Jupyter Notebooks and Google Co-Lab
  • Proficiency with version control systems or DevOps tools (Git, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or equivalent technical degree

Skills

A cognizant engineer at Electric Boat:

  • Maintains complete and total ownership of their assigned work (quality, cost, and schedule performance).
  • Understands that their signature signifies ownership and responsibility.
  • Speaks up and stops any work that is not being conducted in accordance with standards.
  • Develops the broad and deep knowledge needed for their role and understands how their work fits into the larger whole.
  • Keeps developing their skills, is aware of the limits of their knowledge, and seeks input from mentors and experts.
  • Commits to the success of their team, not just their personal success.
  • Maintains detailed, well-organized records of their work.
  • Identifies and implements improvement ideas as a routine part of their work.
  • Effectively communicates technical and programmatic information to their team, management, and stakeholders.
  • Continually assesses risk throughout a project and develops mitigation plans production.
