Position Description

The Guest Services Division, Transportation Office, is seeking a Chauffeur/Bus Driver. The Chauffeur/Bus Driver provides safe, reliable transportation services for Laboratory employees, guests, users, and visitors in support of the Laboratory's scientific mission. Under general supervision, the incumbent operates assigned vehicles, ensures a high level of customer service, and supports transportation operations as needed.

This position reports to the Guest Services Division Transportation Specialist. Standard work schedules include Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.; or Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flexibility is required to accommodate operational needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate Laboratory vehicles to safely transport employees, guests, and visitors to designated locations.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to passengers, ensuring a positive customer experience.
  • Maintain appropriate professional appearance, demeanor, and conduct consistent with Laboratory standards.
  • Conduct basic vehicle checks and report any operational or safety concerns.
  • Assist passengers as needed, including those requiring ADA-accessible accommodation, by providing entry and exit support and handling light items when appropriate.
  • Follow assigned routes, schedules, and dispatch instructions.
  • May be temporarily assigned to dispatch duties, including coordinating vehicle and driver assignments.
  • Operate a tablet-based dispatch system to manage trip assignments, review client information, and follow optimized routing instructions.
  • Uphold all traffic regulations (including on-site and on public roads), Laboratory policies, and safety standards to ensure a secure and reliable transportation experience.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills when coordinating with clients, team members, and management to address transportation requirements and resolve service issues
  • Perform other related driving and transportation support duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Have a valid New York State driver's license.
  • Have or must obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with Passenger (P) endorsement.
  • Safe driving record.
  • Proven ability to engage with a diverse range of clients in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrated capability to engage effectively with others and communicate information accurately through verbal and basic written methods.
  • Working knowledge of tablet-based applications for tracking passengers, coordinating pick-ups, and executing route assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience in diagnosing problems and resolving operational issues through effective troubleshooting and sound judgment.
  • Must successfully complete all required job training within the established timeframe.
  • Be able to adhere to BNL's safety rules and regulations.
  • Meet and maintain the medical surveillance requirements of the position.
  • Able to provide a phone number for call-out and contact purposes.

Other information:

This is a Testing Designated Position. Employees in DOE-defined testing designated positions (TDPs) are subject to drug testing, including pre-placement, random, reasonable suspicion, occurrence, post-accident, and follow-up drug testing.

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The Lab's placement policy is to select the best qualified candidate for an available position. With respect to Bargaining Unit positions, candidates are considered in the following order: (1) present benefits-eligible employees within the department/division and/or appropriate bargaining unit, with preference for those within the immediate work group; (2) present benefits-eligible employees within the Laboratory; and (3) outside applicants. The starting salary for this position is $34.50.
