The City of Champaign is seeking an expert electrician who can apply their knowledge to traffic signals, street lighting, and similar specialized equipment for a career opportunity as a Traffic and Lighting Supervisor in the Operations Division of the Public Works Department. In this role, you will have the opportunity to impact the quality of life and safety for people living, working, and visiting our community. 

Responsibilities of Position

As the Traffic and Lighting Supervisor, you will  supervise and direct the skilled and high performing team that keeps traffic flowing efficiently and safely by ensuring traffic signals and street lighting are maintained and in good working order. You will plan and organize the repair and maintenance of pedestrian crosswalk signals, pedestrian pushbuttons, school flashers, and other specialized equipment as well parking control and other informational signage, pavement markings and JULIE locates.

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: providing high quality customer service, assisting with Public Works operational support for public events, directing hazard mitigation endeavors, and other activities deemed essential to City infrastructure maintenance and improvement. This position serves as a rotating on-call supervisor for the Public Works Operations Division after hours response and participates in the City’s snow and ice removal efforts and other emergency response that may require working up to 16-hour shifts with little or no advance notice.

The annual starting salary range is $92,714 - $105,543, DOQ, plus an excellent fringe benefits package.  Applications must be submitted online to Champaignil.gov/jobs no later than Monday, May 25, 2026.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience at a master electrician level defined as:
  • At least four (4) years or 8,000 hours of experience in the installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, wiring, and equipment.
  • Successfully passed the National Standard Master Electrician Examination administered by the International Code Council.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Supervisory experience that demonstrates the ability to plan and manage the work of subordinate staff.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within an approved timeframe, Class B CDL without air brake restriction issued by the State of Illinois.
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain within an approved timeframe, forklift certification.
  • Current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College courses or degree in electricity, electronics and mechanics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, traffic engineering, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of equipment and hardware/software related to street lighting, traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and/or JULIE locates.
  • College coursework or specialized education/training in traffic engineering.
  • Knowledge of or experience with applicable ordinances, regulations and guidance, such as National Electrical Code Standards, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Illinois Commerce Commission, and JULIE, Inc.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure maintenance and worksite safety regulations.
  • Experience supervising work crews in the field.
  • Experience supervising snow and ice removal operations/crews.

Drug screening will be required.
