Position description

NATURE AND PURPOSE

Incumbent will investigate novel biometeorological and biophysical methods to quantify woody perennial crops water use and stress. Efforts of the Assistant Project Scientist will involve several cropping systems (e.g. olives, almonds, pistachios, grapes) studied in field settings typical on commercial orchards and vineyards throughout California. Work will integrate with efforts of other team members involved in the GRAPEX and T-REX projects that aim to develop, refine, and apply remotely sensed tools for use precision management of vineyard and orchard systems. Focus will be on the integration of remote sensing with field-scale micrometeorological measurement techniques aiming to develop solutions for growers.

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (85%)

Research activity (55%)

Design, develop and coordinate projects and experiments to study surface energy and mass fluxes in crops.

Develop methods to quantify crop using various proximal and remote sensing systems.

Supervise students and staff in developing methods, collecting data, interpreting results, troubleshooting problems, and planning follow-up experiments.

Publication (20%)

Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, having a leadership role when needed.

Grant Acquisition (10%)

Contribute to writing proposals and reports to funding agencies.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)

Present research results at conferences and meetings. Give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups.

Serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate.

Participate in professional societies or other educational/research organizations appropriate to the candidate's specific field.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.

May engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Hydrology, Atmospheric Science or a closely related field

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Postdoc experience and ability to integrate information from agronomy, hydrology, climatology, remote sensing, physics, plant physiology, statistics, and soil-plant-atmospheric water relation. Experience with UAS systems and eddy covariance instrumentation field deployment.
