ABOUT VEECO You probably don't realize it, but what we do at Veeco touches the lives of every person, every day. It's a bold statement, but it's true. From the smartphones in our pockets that access the world's collective knowledge, to the cloud-based services where all that information lives, to high-speed wireless communication and computing power needed to drive artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, gaming and so much more, our technology is all around us. We design, develop, manufacture, and service highly complex, cutting-edge machines used by our customers to create the essential devices that drive the digital age, connect the world, and improve the human experience. Along with the world's leading technology companies, many of which are household names, we help solve their most difficult material science challenges, enabling technologies for a more connected, sustainable, and convenient world. We're looking for material difference-makers to join our growing team. Interested? Learn more at www.veeco.com/careers. OVERVIEW Veeco's next generation semiconductor manufacturing platforms depend on a rare combination of precision motion control, industrial automation, and custom electronic hardware. The challenge is not simply controlling a machine or designing a circuit board. It is creating tightly integrated electrical systems that deliver nanometer-scale accuracy, high equipment uptime, and consistent production performance in some of the world's most demanding manufacturing environments. Veeco continues to invest in advanced semiconductor process technologies, including laser annealing, advanced packaging, deposition, and related manufacturing systems, where precision control and hardware innovation are critical differentiators. As a Senior Electrical & Controls Engineer, you will own the electrical architectures that translate complex process requirements into production-ready equipment used by leading semiconductor manufacturers worldwide. You will work across the full electrical stack, from custom printed circuit board (PCB) design and embedded electronics to Beckhoff programmable logic controller (PLC) architectures, motion-control systems, safety systems, and machine automation. Your work will directly influence system performance, manufacturability, reliability, and customer success while shaping foundational technologies used across future Veeco platforms. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own electrical and controls architectures that deliver nanometer-scale positioning accuracy, repeatable process performance, and high equipment availability.
- Lead design decisions across motion control, sensing, custom PCB hardware, embedded electronics, and industrial automation from concept through customer deployment.
- Own custom PCB architectures and mixed-signal electronic designs, translating system requirements into manufacturable hardware that enables precision control, sensing, and machine performance.
- Drive PCB development from architecture through schematic capture, layout guidance, hardware bring-up, verification, and production release while meeting electrical, thermal, reliability, and signal-integrity requirements.
- Lead industrial automation architectures using Beckhoff TwinCAT, TwinSAFE, EtherCAT, and related control technologies that maximize equipment reliability, safety, and operating efficiency.
- Resolve complex system-level challenges through modeling, diagnostics, experimentation, and data-driven root-cause analysis, turning technical uncertainty into predictable system performance.
- Influence technology and supplier decisions by balancing performance, scalability, manufacturability, reliability, and total cost of ownership.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of directly relevant experience, or a Master's degree and a minimum of 6 years of directly relevant experience.
- Experience designing and implementing closed-loop motion-control systems using servo motors, actuators, sensors, and encoders.
- Experience designing complex multi-layer printed circuit boards, including mixed-signal circuitry, power distribution, analog front ends, and communication interfaces.
- Experience developing embedded software or firmware in C or C++ for real-time or industrial applications.Experience implementing industrial control systems using Beckhoff PLC platforms and EtherCAT industrial networks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Deep expertise in both custom PCB design and industrial control systems, with the ability to move seamlessly between board-level hardware design and machine-level automation architecture.
- Skilled at designing, tuning, and optimizing high-performance multi-axis motion systems operating in precision manufacturing environments.
- Experience defining PCB fabrication requirements, stack-ups, impedance-control strategies, signal-integrity requirements, and design-for-manufacturing considerations.
- Experience integrating embedded electronics, PLC controls, motion systems, and advanced sensing technologies into complex capital equipment.
- Skilled at translating system-level requirements into practical electrical, firmware, and controls solutions while balancing performance, risk, cost, and manufacturability.Skilled at hardware bring-up and advanced troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers, JTAG tools, and real-time diagnostics.Able to communicate complex technical tradeoffs clearly across mechanical, software, systems, manufacturing, field-service, and customer-facing engineering teams.
- Background in semiconductor capital equipment, advanced manufacturing systems, precision automation, or related high-performance industrial environments.
- Demonstrated record of independently delivering complex electrical subsystems from concept through validation and production deployment, consistent with an advanced professional individual contributor role.
