Position: Excavator Operator
Base Pay: $21.50 - $26.50 per hour


Job Overview:
Francis O Day Co. Inc., a leading paving and excavation company that operates in Maryland and Virginia, is seeking experienced Excavator Operators to join our team.

The Excavator Operator (mainline and backfill) role is an hourly skilled craft position whose primary function is the safe and efficient operation of the excavator. A mainline operator is an experienced operator who can cut to grade, handle and place pipe, and has experience working with trench box. A backfill operator is responsible for placing and compacting dirt on the already installed pipe.

Requirements:
  • 2 to 4 years of experience preferred.
  • Must be able to pass drug & alcohol screening.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must have very good hand, foot and eye coordination to safely operate equipment.
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.

Job Duties:
  • Understands trench safety requirements, soil types and use of protective systems.
  • Must have knowledge of pipeline and grade compaction requirements.
  • Working to precise standards to excavate line and grade for Mainline Waterline.
  • Maintain depth by checking the laser beam or grade stakes and communicating with operator.
  • Excavates around existing utilities, to install Mainline and backfill piping.
  • Inspecting equipment for deficiencies, including cleaning, greasing and oiling, and submits report indicating equipment condition.
  • Communicates with the pipelayer about the alignment of the pipe by using hand signals to ensure the proper depth and placement.
  • Knowledge of OSHA trench safety standards.

Physical Demands:
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 lbs.
  • Requires extensive and heavy physical activity and dexterity.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment:
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Ability to use required technology (machine controls, sensors).
