DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Solid Waste Specialist Trainee, you will participate in a 12-month training period in which you will be trained to perform the duties of a Solid Waste Specialist. You will learn how to conduct evaluations of various solid waste management facilities located in the five counties served by the Southeast Regional Office. Solid waste management facilities are evaluated for compliance with Commonwealth environmental statutes, regulations, and department policies pertaining to the management of solid waste. Duties will focus on the inspection of hazardous, residual, and municipal waste management facilities. You will also learn how to investigate citizen complaints, as well as spills or incidents involving pollution, and initiate enforcement actions if violations are identified. You will further gain the skills necessary to review remediation plans and ensure that the appropriate corrective actions are taken to resolve violations.
Additional areas of focus include learning how to review permit applications and plans to determine if the proposed plans are in compliance with departmental regulations, as well as collecting samples of various media and wastes to establish compliance status. Excellent communication skills are essential, as you will also participate in meetings with public officials, the regulated community, and citizens concerning solid waste management issues. Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Travel is required.
- Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Norristown. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
- A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
